General Imaging's General Electric X3 digital camera. Photo provided by General Imaging Co. General Imaging: Nine more new GE digicams
By
(Sunday, March 8, 2009 - 18:56 EDT)

Alongside its waterproof G3WP digital camera, General Imaging has announced nine other new digicams across its A, E and X-series.

The General Electric A950, A1035, A1050, A1235 and A1250 are all very closely related with the exception of their choice of image sensor and zoom lens, and of course their pricing. The GE A950 has a 9.1 megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens, while the General Electric A1050 is identical save for its choice of a 10.1 megapixel sensor. The GE A1035 keeps the GE A1050's ten megapixel imager, but drops the lens to a 3x optical zoom. The GE A1235 upgrades the sensor resolution to 12.2 megapixels while retaining the 3X zoom. Finally, the GE A1250 keeps the twelve megapixel imager but uses the same 5x optical zoom lens as the A950 and A1050 models. Beyond these slight differences, the group are essentially identical to each other, including SD / SDHC card storage plus 24MB of built-in memory, USB 2.0 / standard definition AV output connections, and drawing power from two AA batteries.

The A950 is priced at just $90, while the General Electric A1035 is priced identically - apparently in terms of cost the reduction in zoom strength being offset by the slight increase in sensor resolution. The A1050 steps up slightly in price to $100. Cramming an extra couple of megapixels into the General Electric A1235 raises the price by a third to $120, while the most expensive of the new A-series models is the General Electric A1250 priced at $130. For more on the A-series introductions, read our GE A950 preview, GE A1035 preview, GE A1050 preview, GE A1235 preview, or GE A1250 preview as dictated by your preferences for resolution, zoom strength, and budget.

Jumping to the E-series, we have three new models. Priced at $180, the General Electric E1255W is the most affordable of the group. The GE E1255W couples a twelve megapixel imager with a 5x zoom lens that has a 28mm equivalent wide angle. Other noteworthy features of the E1255W include a 3.0" LCD display, SD / SDHC / 24MB internal storage, USB 2.0 and standard-definition AV output, and power from a DS5370 Lithium Ion rechargeable. For more, read our GE E1255W preview.

Stepping up the E-series line, we have the General Electric E1250TW priced at $200. The GE E1250TW also has a twelve megapixel imager and a 5x zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. The E1250TW's 3.0" LCD display is a touch-screen type though, and as well as accepting SD / SDHC cards it boosts the internal storage to a generous 116MB. The GE E1250 retains the USB 2.0 and standard-definition AV output, adds high-definition connectivity of unspecified type, and power from a different GB-40 Lithium Ion rechargeable. For more, read our GE E1250TW preview.

Finally, we have the General Electric E1276W, also priced at $200. The GE E1276W, yet again, has a twelve megapixel imager - but it couples it to a more powerful 7x zoom lens with 28mm wide angle. Like its other new E-series siblings, the E1276W has a 3.0" LCD display, but it isn't a touch-screen type like that on the E1250TW. As with that camera, the E1276W accepts both SD / SDHC cards and has a generous 116MB internal storage. In other respects it is more similar to the E1255W though, with USB 2.0 and standard-definition AV output only, and power from the same DS5370 Lithium Ion rechargeable. For more, read our GE E1276W preview.

Finally for this news item (the waterproof G3WP being covered in a separate news item, remember), the ninth of General Imaging's new announcements is the long-zoom General Electric X3 digital camera. Priced at $230, the GE X3 couples a twelve megapixel imager with a 12x zoom lens that has a 33mm equivalent wide angle. Other noteworthy features of the X3 include a 2.7" LCD display, electronic viewfinder, SD / SDHC / 116MB internal storage, USB 2.0 and standard-definition AV output, and power from four AA alkaline or NiMH batteries. For more, read our GE X3 preview.

Original Source Press Release:

General Imaging debuts 2009 GE cameras

TORRANCE, Calif. (March 3, 2009) - General Imaging has released its 2009 lineup of GE digital cameras, introducing a full array of exciting new features, including auto scene detection, pan-capture panorama, and optical image stabilization. General Imaging, the worldwide exclusive licensee for GE digital cameras, unveiled ten new models this morning at the 2009 Photo Marketing Association trade show in Las Vegas.

Now entering their third model year, GE digital cameras offer higher resolution and more powerful zooms than ever before. Each camera in the 2009 collection features at least 9 megapixels of resolution - with seven models boasting 12 or more - helping preserve all life's memories with greater clarity. Ready for your close-up? GE cameras certainly are, as seven of the new models feature zooms of 5X or higher, including an impressive 12X zoom in the X3 to make those big smiles appear even bigger.

Waterproof - and hard to miss
GE cameras have always been a great fit for the active lifestyle, but the fun new G3WP is built to withstand swim parties, weekends at the lake, or rain on your parade. The G3WP is waterproof to a depth of 10 feet.

"This is our strongest lineup yet," said General Imaging CEO Tom Haga. "We've got cameras for every lifestyle. GE digital cameras are slim, stylish and easy to use. We continue to offer an amazing feature set at an affordable price."

Among the features on the 2009 GE digital camera line:

  • Auto Scene Detection. This feature automatically determines the appropriate scene type and optimizes exposure for sharp, vibrant pictures.
  • Pan-Capture Panorama. One of our most popular features just got even better. Our earlier panorama stitching feature allowed the user to seamlessly stitch together three photos into one extra-wide angle image. Pan-Capture Panorama is even easier, letting the user pan the camera across the scene while the engine automatically captures, determines overlap, and stitches the frames into a single panoramic picture.
  • Optical Image Stabilization. While all GE cameras employ image stabilization to overcome camera shake, General Imaging has included superior optical image stabilization technology in the E1276W and the X3.
  • Touch Panel LCD. The new E1250TW utilizes touch-screen technology to allow the user to control certain features by touching icons displayed on the three-inch LCD screen.
  • HDTV Output. The E1250TW also allows users to view high-definition photos connecting directly to their HDTV.

Most of the popular features from earlier models are back for 2009, including blink, smile and face detection, auto-adjust brightness LCD, and in-camera red-eye removal. Three of the new models also feature 28mm equivalent wide-angle lenses.
