New firmware prevents camera lock-up problem...

Canon Japan has today released an update to the firmware for its Canon EOS D30 SLR digital camera. Firmware version 1.0.1.0, which is already installed in cameras starting with serial number xxx600000, fixes a problem that causes the camera to lock up when the menu is turned on, the info button pressed and the main switch turned off in that sequence. The lock-up can be cleared by taking the battery out of the camera, and then putting it back in again.

According to Canon, the firmware does not affect anything else; notably it does not correct the 'Auto Power-Off' problem which must be fixed by returning the camera to Canon for updating. Full instructions for how to perform the update to firmware version 1.0.1.0 are on Canon's firmware download page. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter - firmware upgrades performed incorrectly risk turning your camera into a $3000 paper-weight, and as unusual a paper-weight as it might be, it probably wouldn't be worth $3000 to you. ;)
