Just before we break for the weekend, Adobe has shipped new release candidates of its Camera Raw and DNG Converter apps. Both bring support for 14 new camera and camera back models, including the extremely popular Sony A6000 and Fuji X-T1. Support is also added for an impressive 37 new lens types, with Sony lenses in particular receiving copious love.

The Camera Raw RC also adds several new features including support for Fujifilm's in-camera color profiles -- but only if you're using the subscription-only Creative Cloud release. All new features are disabled for Photoshop CS6 owners, and Adobe also no longer supports use of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OSX 10.6 for Camera Raw 8.4 RC.

Interestingly, there is as-yet no corresponding Lightroom release. Typically the photographer-centric app receives its release candidates at the same time as Camera Raw and DNG Converter, but that's apparently not the case this time around.

Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter now support the extremely popular Fujifilm X-T1.

In all, the list of newly-supported cameras is as follows:

The Camera Raw 8.4 CC release candidate also has several new features beyond the support for Fujifilm's color profiles:

  • New before/after preview system with side-by-side and split-view display, and synced pan/zoom
  • Support for correction of bright pupils on pets with the red-eye tool
  • Reset Local Correction Settings function added
  • "Fill Image" added to context menu for Radial Filter
  • "Check All" and "Check None" buttons added to Synchronize, New Preset, Save Settings, and Copy/Paste (Bridge) dialog boxes
  • Keyboard shortcut added to flip the crop aspect ratio in the Crop Tool and Straighten Tool
  • Context menu added to Histogram pane
  • Whites and Blacks now support Auto Levels-like functionality
  • Separate Auto Temperature and Auto Tint feature
  • Ability to option-click shortcut in Synchronize, New Preset, Save Settings, and Copy/Paste (Bridge) dialog boxes
  • Background color of work area can now be set.

Three bugs are also fixed:

  • Nikon D800/D800E raw images shot with a DX lens in Live View Video mode couldn't be opened
  • Grain effect didn't vary from image to image, yielding an unnatural effect with time-lapse and video frame sequences.
  • Artifacts appeared along edges of photo when applying grain.

As usual, all of the new features are absent in the simultaneously-issued Camera Raw 8.4 CS6 release candidate, although it shares the new camera and lens profile support. DNG Converter 8.4 release candidate, meanwhile, is included inside the Camera Raw 8.4 release candidate download.
