It might look like a children’s toy, but what you’re seeing is GekkoPod, a flexible smartphone and camera mount, currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter.

Already, GekkoPod has amassed roughly $50,000, over three times its initial $15,001 goal, with over 30 days left in the campaign. What sets GekkoPod apart from the many other smartphone and action cam mounts out there is its unique design.

Taking inspiration — both in design and namesake — from gecko feet, GekkoPod uses a flexible, four-legged design to securely mount your compact camera, smartphone or action cam to anything you can wrap its legs around. To do this, it uses internal, iron-based springs inside a silicone material, which is moulded with non-slip dots on each foot for better grip.

To mount different devices, a number of interchangeable mounting platforms can be attached to the GekkoPod, including a universal smartphone mount, a GoPro mount, a ballhead mount and a standard 1/4–20” tripod mount.

The GekkoPod weighs only 1.6 ounces, not including a mount. Even with a mount, it’s still small and light enough to take with you most anywhere.

You can secure a GekkoPod for a pledge of $16, which will get you the GoPro and mobile mounts in addition to the GekkoPod. As your pledge goes up in price, rewards increase as well, including more mounting options and limited-run color options.
