If someone told you that Canon was getting into the drone business, you might reasonably expect that they would be trying to tap into the massive consumer market. But no, Canon’s first drone is a search and rescue drone designed around the company’s impressive ME20F-SH camera, which can record video at up to ISO 4,000,000.

The Canon PD6E2000-AW-CJ1 drone – the name really rolls off the tongue – is weather-proof and has a 2-axis gimbal. The drone can hold up to 10 kilograms of weight. There isn’t anything particularly special about the drone, the camera is the real draw here and it’s search and rescue applications are immediately apparent in the video below.

There isn’t much information available about the drone yet, but Canon Rumors is reporting that the drone will cost around $20,000, which they presume doesn’t include the special high-sensitivity camera, which itself isn’t cheap.
