"Does gear matter?" is a question photographers have worked to answer many times, sometimes with much disagreement . In his latest video, landscape photographer and educator Thomas Heaton has offered his own take on the question by comparing three images taken with different cameras.

In this case, he runs the gamut from APS-C in the form of the Canon EOS M5 to the medium format Fujifilm GFX 50S with the full-frame Canon 5D Mark IV splitting the difference. In most cases, people view images at a low resolution. For many photographers, that's how they share their work almost exclusively, so a smaller sensor might not be a hindrance whatsoever. Other photographers place a greater emphasis on usability and compact form factor, meaning that a camera like the Canon EOS M5 might be the perfect camera for them, even if others might find the image quality lacking.

It may surprise you to see which image was captured with which camera. Then again, you are viewing low resolution versions of the images, which is part of Heaton's point about how much gear matters.
