  • Nikon 40mm f/2.8G DX AF-S Micro Nikkor

9 out of 10 points and recommended
Very sharp! On full frame cameras, you can get useful results if you stop down to F/8 or more!
7-blade iris makes for 'busy' bokeh. Auto-focus not the quickest.

Bought this one second-hand some years ago and it has proved itself to be an extremely useful lens - doubling as a 'standard 60mm (equiv)' and a fast macro. Sharpness is excellent but bokeh can be rather 'busy' in some lighting - especially dappled woodland sunlight. Auto-focus isn't as quick as we've come to expect from AF-S lenses, but the range limiting switch helps somewhat.

I can't recall how much I paid for it but I do remember thinking I'd got a bargain once I'd tried it out!

UPDATE: On my D810 in FX mode (as opposed to DX crop) I'm delighted to find that corner shading is only a minor issue if you stop down to to f/8 or f/9. I'm getting infatuated with this lens!

Rating stays at 9 though. It would need proper weather sealing, 9 blade iris, and quicker autofocus to get the full 10 marks. Nevertheless, HIGHLY recommended!
