Why We Like the GoPro LIT HERO

Weighing just 93 grams, the GoPro LIT HERO is designed to go almost anywhere. Its compact size makes it easy to slip into a pocket or attach to a mount for hands-free recording. The standout feature is its integrated front-facing LED light, which has three brightness settings and can also function as a torch when the camera is switched off. It’s useful for illuminating nearby subjects in dim environments, although it isn’t a replacement for a dedicated video light when you need to illuminate a larger scene.

The camera records 4K video at up to 30 frames per second in its standard mode, with additional video options for different shooting situations, including 1080p recording. It also captures 12MP still photos, giving you a simple way to document trips and everyday adventures without bringing a separate camera. The built-in light adds flexibility when shooting close-up subjects or recording in darker spaces.

Mounting versatility is another advantage. The LIT HERO supports GoPro’s mounting system and features an integrated 1/4-20-inch thread for compatible tripods and accessories. Depending on your setup, you can attach it to helmets, handlebars, chest mounts, selfie sticks, and other accessories to capture different perspectives. Its waterproof construction is rated to 16 feet (5 meters), making it suitable for many wet-weather activities and shallow-water adventures.

What to Consider Before Buying

The front-facing LED helps with nearby subjects, but it won’t overcome every low-light limitation. Like other compact action cameras, the LIT HERO has a small sensor, so image quality can suffer in darker scenes, particularly when there’s little available light. The built-in light is most useful at close range, and it won’t illuminate distant subjects or large environments particularly well.

The camera also makes some compromises to keep its design simple and compact. It lacks RAW photo capture and an external microphone input, limiting flexibility for photographers who want more editing latitude and creators who need a dedicated audio setup. Its built-in battery cannot be swapped out during a shoot, so you’ll need to plan around battery life for longer recording sessions. If you need advanced manual controls, extensive audio options, or interchangeable batteries, a more feature-rich action camera may be a better fit.
