I-C3 technology promises longer battery life, amazing 15-minute recharge times...
Rayovac Corp., the US market leader in rechargeable battery sales with a claimed market share of 75%, has announced a new technology which it claims will offer the ability to fully recharge batteries in 15 minutes or less. The technology, dubbed I-C3 (In-Cell Charge Control), will apparently couple this recharging speed with long battery life as well; the company claims that I-C3 batteries will offer digicam owners "up to four times more shots than an alkaline battery and more than any comparable size lithium ion battery". Along with this, I-C3 batteries should also have a good recharge lifetime, with up to 1000 charges possible.
I-C3 has not yet been commercialised, and the company doesn't expect to be selling batteries and chargers based on the technology for another year or more - the first products should be appearing on the market in mid to late 2003. The technology looks somewhat similar to Sony's InfoLithium system, in that the batteries themselves will have some intelligence. Each cell can communicate its recharge state to the charger, which then supplies the appropriate power to best charge the cell - and to recharge in 15 minutes, we're talking a pretty hefty amount of power! (Our quick math suggests that recharging a 1600mAh battery would require about 6.4 amps of current...)
As an interesting sidenote, Rayovac states in its release that it will launch a new line of alkaline batteries dubbed "Maximum Plus" this spring, which should offer 28% better performance in some devices. It also intends to develop zinc air batteries for consumer products...

In digital cameras, the new Rayovac I-C3 NiMH AA size batteries will deliver up to four times more shots than an alkaline battery and more than any comparable size lithium ion battery, based on current American National Standards Institute (ANSI) battery tests. In devices like power tools and emerging technologies like e-scooters, this new Rayovac I-C3 technology system is projected to last 20 percent longer than any current rechargeable battery, while at the same time significantly reducing charge time.
