Only tangentially related to digital imaging, perhaps, but if you're considering alternatives for backing up your photos then a new bundle from Iomega Corp. could prove attractive.

According to a press release issued by the company, it has released new versions of its Iomega Automatic Backup and Iomega Sync software, and is bundling them with the just-announced Iomega® Zip® 750MB drive. The Automatic Backup software regularly costs $39.95, whilst Iomega Sync normally has to be downloaded - which for modem users is seldom an enjoyable prospect. ;)

750MB Zip disks seem to be retailing for about $10 apiece, so pricing is not particularly attractive compared to media such as CD-R disks, but if you're interested in Iomega's latest offering the bundle may make it somewhat more interesting.

New Iomega® Software Helps Win The Battle of the Backup

Iomega® Automatic Backup and Iomega® Sync Software Now Shipping With New Zip 750MB Drive

SAN DIEGO, August 15, 2002 - Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), a global leader in reliable portable data storage, today released new Iomega® Automatic Backup and Iomega® Sync software, which are included with the just-announced Iomega® Zip® 750MB drive. Together, the two programs give Iomega's Zip drive customers unprecedented power to organize, protect and secure their digital lives.

With Iomega® Automatic Backup software, users gain easy, automatic and transparent protection against data loss due to theft, hard drive failure, hackers, malicious viruses, and human error. Iomega® Sync software helps ensure that customers are always using the latest version of their important files by synchronizing file updates among home, office and laptop computers.

"Iomega software solutions are the essential link between our end-user's critical data and Iomega's data storage devices," said Jet Martin, general manager of software solutions, Iomega Corporation. "Backup and file synchronization software, to create real end-user value, can and should work automatically. Protecting and securing your digital valuables is far too important to leave to chance-using new Iomega Automatic Backup and Iomega Sync software is a powerful defense against data loss."

Automatic Backup

The new Iomega® Automatic Backup software automates file-level backup of the user's data to a local storage device such as a Zip or Iomega HDD drive, or to a network device such as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) server on the LAN. Features include caching, multiple backup configurations, single file selection, and exclude filters, providing the user with even greater control and flexibility.

With Iomega Automatic Backup software, the user selects the source drives, folders or files to protect. Automatic Backup software takes care of the rest. Whenever a file is created, saved, or changed in a protected directory, it is automatically backed up to the user's preferred location. Iomega Automatic Backup can also save multiple file revisions (user configurable), and can perform either scheduled or on-the-fly backups.

Sync

Iomega Sync eliminates the time-consuming, error-prone task of manually copying, renaming and deleting files to keep them up to date on multiple computers. It performs bi-directional synchronization of the most recent file, and its easy-to-use conflict-resolution capability helps the user choose between multiple updates to the same file. Iomega Sync software requires no separate installation on the user's PC; it is powered by Iomega's Active Disk technology, so it launches automatically from a Zip disk.

Iomega Sync software is ideal for mobile users because it makes synchronizing files fast, safe, and automatic. Mobile users gain the assurance that their personal folders, spreadsheets and presentations are always up to date as they move between work, home and other computing locations. Iomega Sync software is also ideal for project teams that are working with shared project files or folders and need to include all team members' latest updates.

Availability

Both Iomega Automatic Backup and Iomega® Sync software are bundled with the new Iomega® Zip 750MB drive, and will be included with other Iomega products in fall 2002. Iomega Automatic Backup software for PC and Mac® users is available separately for $39.95 at www.iomega.com. Iomega Sync for PC users is available as a free download for Iomega Zip drive owners at www.iomega.com.
