Hewlett Packard's Photosmart 7760 photo printer. Courtesy of Hewlett Packard, with modifications by Michael R. Tomkins. HP announces four new photo printers

(Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 07:13 EDT)

Hewlett Packard Co. has announced four new photo printers featuring built-in card slots to accept all of the major digital camera memory formats.

The Photosmart 7260, 7660, 7760 and 7960 all appear to be based on the same standard print engine, but with modifications that cater to different needs. The most basic 7260 model has no LCD and must be used with a PC unless it is connected directly to a digital camera. The 7660 model has a text LCD display, and hence cannot preview images before printing. The 7760 adds a 1.8-inch color LCD display, whilst the top-of-the-line 7960 improves on this with a 2.5-inch LCD display.

All four printers feature a USB port on the front with which they can communicate directly with certain HP digital cameras, as well as USB connectivity on the rear for a PC or Mac computer. The built-in memory card slots on all three printers cater for CompactFlash Type I and II and Microdrive, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, Multi Media Card, Memory Stick (including Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro and Magic Gate), and xD-Picture Card media. (Note: The 7260 specs don't mention the Microdrive, which could just be an oversight - or could indicate the printer doesn't supply enough power for it). Finally, the print speeds, sound levels and power consumption vary slightly from model to model (mostly, but not always, improving as the printers become more expensive).

All but the Photosmart 7960 should be available this month, with the top model to follow next month. Pricing has been set at $99 for the Photosmart 7260, $149 for the Photosmart 7660, $199 for the Photosmart 7760, and $299 for the Photosmart 7960. Full specs for all four models follow:

HP Unveils Breakthroughs in Home Photo Printing, Marking Industry Firsts and Strengthening Its Photo Printer Leadership Position

New Portfolio Includes Industry’s First Consumer Eight-ink Photo Printer and First Wireless All-in-one Device

NEW YORK CITY, August 11, 2003 – HP (NYSE: HPQ) today introduced a new portfolio of home photo printing solutions, including the industry’s first consumer eight-ink photo printer and first all-in-one device with built-in wireless capabilities. The introduction of these printing systems marks the first stage in a series of product rollouts that reconfirms HP as the number one consumer technology company and the leader in the photo printer market.

Within the next several months, HP will be launching more than 100 new products aimed at giving users the most rewarding digital imaging and digital entertainment experiences. These new products will deliver breakthrough advancements around technology and ease-of-use, enabling consumers to enjoy more by simplifying the way people capture and share the important moments of their lives.

HP’s new photo printer portfolio includes six new HP Photosmart photo printers, two new HP Photosmart all-in-ones and one new wide-format HP Deskjet color inkjet printer, along with new photo papers and a new gray photo inkjet print cartridge.

“Today, about 83 percent of the prints generated from a digital camera are printed in the home,” said Kristy Holch, Group Director, InfoTrends Research Group. “Looking ahead, convenience will remain a leading factor in determining consumers' preferred location for printing photos.”

HP Photosmart 7960 Photo Printer -- The Industry’s First Consumer Eight-ink Photo Printer
The HP Photosmart 7960 photo printer, when used in conjunction with the new HP 59 gray photo inkjet print cartridge, the HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge and the HP 57 tri-color inkjet print cartridge, delivers photo printing in eight-ink for stunning color prints with up to 4800-optimized dots-per-inch (dpi) or professional-quality black-and-white prints. Additionally, when combined with HP Premium Plus Photo paper, optimized for eight-ink photo printing, this new printing system is capable of delivering exceptional fade resistance, up to twice as long as traditionally processed photos

The new HP 59 gray photo inkjet print cartridge contains three inks: two shades of gray ink and a new, specially-formulated photo black ink. The inks in the HP 59 gray photo inkjet print cartridge enhance accuracy, widen color gamut, improve contrast and shadow detail in color photos and achieve the neutral grays and deep blacks desired for black-and-white photos. In fact, according to a recent study just completed in the U.S., consumers preferred the overall quality of the new eight-ink HP Photosmart 7960 prints over centrally-processed conventional silver halide development as well as competitive photo inkjet prints.

The HP Photosmart 7960 photo printer features a color 2.5-inch image LCD screen and convenient digital camera memory card slots, enabling users to easily view, edit and print photos without using a computer. Additionally, the HP Photosmart 7960 photo printer can produce borderless prints, up to 8.5 x11-inches.

Packed with new capabilities, the HP Photosmart 7960 photo printer offers the HP Photo Proof Sheet feature, which until now was available exclusively on HP PSC all-in-one devices. With this feature, users simply insert a memory card into one of the printer’s card slots, select “proof sheet” from the LCD screen menu and print a sheet with thumbnails of the images. Users then select the desired photo, size or album layout by filling in the appropriate bubble with a dark pen and re-insert the page into the paper tray, which is then read by the paper sensor. The selected photos will then be printed automatically from the same machine, thus eliminating the use of the computer. In addition, the printer features Video Action Print, allowing users to print a montage of frames from their digital video clips, and it also automatically reduces red eye prior to printing without any editing necessary.

The HP Photosmart 7760, 7660 and 7260 photo printers also join HP’s line-up of A-size photo printers. With the new high-performance photo printers, users can experience exceptional fade resistance3 and true-to-life photo quality, with up to six-ink color printing or up to 4800-optimized dpi2. These printers feature digital camera memory card slots, a convenient way to print photos without using a computer. In addition, the HP Photosmart 7760 photo printer offers an integrated 1.8-inch color LCD screen to easily preview, select and print photos without using a computer. Users also can produce borderless prints, up to 8.5 x 11-inches.

The HP Photosmart 7260 photo printer, HP’s lowest priced photo printer, delivers long-lasting true-to-life color with up to six-ink color printing or up to 4800-optimized dpi2. Users can print picture-perfect borderless 4 x 6-inch photos on HP photo paper with a dedicated 4 x 6-inch photo paper cassette. Built-in digital camera memory card slots and the front USB port make it possible to print photos without a computer.

All three printers are also versatile, offering crisp black text, with the optional HP 56 black inkjet print cartridge.

HP PSC 2510 Photosmart All-in-one – The Industry’s First All-in-one with Built-in Wireless Capabilities
Marking another industry first, the HP PSC 2510 Photosmart all-in-one, which includes printing, faxing, scanning and copying capabilities, features built-in 802.11b wireless and wired Ethernet embedded home networking capabilities. Users can connect the all-in-one with up to five home computers, offering users extensive flexibility in connectivity options.

With the HP PSC 2510 Photosmart all-in-one, users can utilize the wireless capabilities to print, scan and access photos from the built-in digital camera memory card slots. The all-in-one also includes the capabilities to e-mail photos without a computer from home networks and to print a montage of frames from digital video clips using Video Action Print through the control panel.

In addition, the HP PSC 2510 Photosmart all-in-one acts as a “mini-photo lab,” featuring HP’s exclusive Photo Proof Sheet and a 2.5-inch color image LCD screen. Users can produce fade resistant3, true-to-life photo-quality prints with up to six-ink color printing or up to 4800-optimized dpi.

Joining the new line of all-in-ones, the HP PSC 2410 Photosmart all-in-one has the ability to print, scan, fax and copy photos quickly and easily. It includes a 2.5-inch color image LCD screen, HP’s exclusive Photo Proof Sheet, and direct printing from a digital camera and memory cards slots, providing the ability to perform a variety of functions without using a computer.

New Compact 4 x 6-inch Photo Printers
Back by popular demand, HP also announced two new compact 4 x 6-inch photo printers, the HP Photosmart 245 and 145 photo printers. These printers provide a fast, easy way to produce a photo in as little as 90 seconds, and print photos at home or on the go – no computer required. Users can print directly from a digital camera via the printer’s memory card slots, which support Compact Flash, Memory Stick, MultiMedia, Secure Digital, SmartMedia and xD-Picture Card. Additionally, users are able to print up to 4800-optimized dpi2, borderless, 4 x 6-inch prints using specially designed HP photo papers, and can produce gorgeous black and white photos using the new HP 59 gray photo inkjet cartridge. The HP Photosmart 245 photo printer features a 1.8-inch color LCD screen that allows the users to easily preview, edit and select photos from the printer’s display, while the HP Photosmart 145 photo printer features a multi-line text LCD.

All of the Photosmart printing systems introduced today feature the new and improved HP Photo and Imaging software, which includes a host of features for capturing, editing, printing and sharing digital images. The user interface is incredibly robust and is backward-compatible, automatically identifying previously installed HP products and updating the software.

Print Gorgeous Photos up to 13 x 19-inches
Rounding out HP’s photo printer line-up, the HP Deskjet 9650 color inkjet printer delivers gorgeous photos, up to 13 x 19-inches in size. In addition to the photo enthusiast, this printer is designed for small businesses and home offices that require high-performance, wide-format color and photo printing. The HP Deskjet 9650 printer offers high-quality, professional results with up six-ink printing or up to 4800-optimized dpi. Users can also achieve borderless, edge-to-edge printing options on media from 4 x 6- to 11 x 17-inches with maximum versatility at print speeds up to 20 ppm black text and up to 15 ppm color.

New Photo Paper for Everyday Photo Printing
HP also announced the industry’s lowest cost photo paper for everyday printing - HP Everyday Photo Paper. Heavier and thicker than plain paper, HP Everyday Photo Paper is specifically designed for everyday photos when plain papers won’t due - including photo proofs, test prints, photos that kids print and images downloaded from email and the Internet.

Additionally, HP recently expanded its industry-leading premium inkjet photo paper line - HP Premium Plus Photo Paper - with a new glossy borderless 4 x 6-inch photo paper and a new matte6 4 x 6-inch photo paper with perforated tab. The entire HP Premium Plus Photo Paper line has been enhanced with an improved finish and touch - a thicker, glossier and heavier finish for a studio-grade look and feel that rivals traditional silver halide prints in print quality. When used with select HP inks, HP Premium Plus Photo Paper produces images that resist fading for genereations.

Co-designed with HP printers and HP inks, this premium photo paper delivers vibrant and consistent color, accurate skin tones and rich, high-contrast black for stunning, studio-quality photos. In fact, the paper’s overall print quality was judged by consumers to be better than traditionally processed digital photos.
