Camera Modes and Menus

Movie Mode
Records short movie clips with sound. The actual amount of recording time varies with the resolution setting and amount of memory card space, but recording will continue until either the Shutter button is pressed again or the memory card runs out of space. Limited exposure controls are available, though there are no menu options.

Scene Program Mode
Offers a selection of preset "scene" shooting modes, for capturing good images in specific shooting situations. Available scene types are Portrait, Landscape, Sports, and Night Scene. Limited exposure controls are available, though the camera controls most settings.

Auto Exposure Mode
Gives the camera control of all exposure parameters, although the user still can adjust flash mode, Drive mode, file size and quality settings, and zoom.

Program AE Exposure Mode
Returns most of the exposure control to the user, although the camera remains in charge of aperture and shutter speed values. Turning the Command wheel selects a range of equivalent aperture/shutter speed combinations though.

Shutter Priority Exposure Mode
Gives the user control over shutter speed (from 1/1,000 to three seconds), while the camera selects the best aperture value. All other exposure options are available.

Aperture Priority Exposure Mode
Similar to Shutter Priority mode, only now the user controls the aperture setting (from f/2.8 at wide angle or f3.1 at telephoto to f/8) while the camera selects the shutter speed. All exposure options are available.

Manual Exposure Mode
Gives the user complete control over exposure parameters, including aperture and shutter speed. The shutter speed range expands to include times from 1/10,000 to 30 seconds. All exposure options are adjustable, but exposure compensation is disabled since there's no automatic exposure selection to adjust.

Set Mode
Displays the camera's settings menu, described below.

Playback Mode
This mode lets you scroll through captured images and movies, view a nine-image index display, zoom into a captured image to inspect it more closely, delete unwanted images, and set up images for printing on DPOF compatible devices.

Record Menu
Accessed by pressing the Menu button in any of the Record modes. Not all options will be available in all exposure modes.

  • Self-Timer: Sets the Self-Timer to Off, two, or ten seconds.
  • White Balance: Sets the color balance of the image to Auto, Custom 1, Custom 2, Daylight, Shade, Daylight Fluorescent, Warm White Fluorescent, Cool White Fluorescent, or Incandescent.
  • AF Mode: Sets the AF area selection to Area, Center, or Multi modes.
  • Photometry: Changes the camera's metering mode to Average, Spot, or Multi (64-zone metering).
  • Auto Bracketing: Sets the step size between successive shots in the auto-bracketing mode. Choices are +/- 1/3, 2/3, and 1.0 EV steps.
  • Sharpness: Adjusts the in-camera image sharpening to Hard, Normal, or Soft.
  • Multiple Exposure Mode: Turns the Multiple Exposure mode on or off, which continuously overlays exposures for a double/multiple-exposed effect.
  • Flash Brightness: Boosts or cuts the power of the built-in flash from -0.6 to +0.6 EV.
  • External Flash: Enables or disables the external flash hot shoe and PC Sync connections.

Playback Menu: Accessed by pressing the Menu button in Playback mode.

  • Erase: Deletes either all frames or the current frame from the memory card, also has an option to cancel.
  • Protect: Write-protects or removes write protection from individual images or all images on the memory card. While protected, images can only be deleted via card formatting.
  • Auto Play: Enables an automatic slideshow of the images on the memory card. You can select the interval between images.
  • Voice Memo: Records a short, 30-second sound clip to accompany a captured image.

Setup Menu: The following menu options appear when entering Set mode:

  • Image Display: Turns the instant image review function off, or sets it to Preview mode.
  • Media: Establishes either Microdrive or xD-Picture Card as the primary storage media. (If both types are present in the camera, it will use the one chosen as "primary" first.)
  • Power Save: Tells the camera to shut itself off after two or five minutes of inactivity. You can also disable the Power Save function, in which case the camera will remain powered up until its batteries run down.
  • Format: Formats the memory card, deleting all files (even protected ones).
  • Beep: Sets the volume of the camera's operation sounds (three steps, or disabled).
  • Shutter: Sets the volume of the camera's shutter release sound (three steps, or disabled).

  • Date/Time: Sets the camera's internal clock and calendar.
  • Adapter: Selecting Yes here sets up the camera to work with accessory lens adapter kits.
  • Frame Number: Specifies whether images are numbered continuously from memory card to memory card, or whether frame numbering resets with each new card inserted.
  • CCD-RAW: If activated, this option records images in the RAW format.
  • Language: Changes the language of the LCD menu display.
  • Video System: Sets the video signal to NTSC or PAL.

  • USB Mode: Sets up the USB connection to operate in DSC, PC CAM or PictBridge modes. DSC is the standard mode for downloading images. PC CAM lets the camera work as a web cam when connected to a computer, using the Windows-only PictureHello software included with the camera. PictBridge mode lets the camera be connected directly to compatible printers, to print images without the need for a computer.
  • 1394 Mode: Sets up the IEEE 1394 FireWire connection to operate in DSC, or IEEE 1394 Photography Function modes. DSC is the standard mode for downloading images. IEEE 1394 Photography Function mode lets you control the camera remotely when connected to a computer or have images automatically downloaded from the camera to your PC upon capture, using the Windows / MacOS9 Hyper-Utility 2 software included with the camera. As well as image capture and interval shooting functions, the software allows the following settings to be controlled over the FireWire connection or saved to your PC for later reuse:
    • Photography mode (Auto, P, S, A, M, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Scene)
    • Flash mode (Auto, Red-eye reduction, Off, Slow Synchro, Forced, Red-Eye Reduction + Slow Synchro)
    • Macro mode (Off, Macro, Super Macro)
    • AF mode (Multi, Center, Area)
    • Metering mode (Multi, Spot, Average)
    • Focus mode (Single, Continuous, Manual)
    • White Balance (Auto, Custom 1 + 2, Fine, Shady, Daylight Fluorescent, Warm White Fluorescent, Cool White Fluorescent, Incandescent)
    • Sharpness (Normal, Soft, Hard)
    • Flash Brightness Adjustment (-0.6, -0.3, 0, +0.3 and +0.6 EV)
    • External Flash (On, Off)
    • CCD-RAW mode (On, Off)
    • File Size (1M, 2M, 3M, 6M Normal, 6M Fine)
    • ISO Sensitivity (Auto, 200, 400, 800, 1600)
    • FinePix Color Settings (Standard, Chrome, Black & White)
    • Display mode (Framing Guide, Focus Check, Off)
    • Focus adjustment and One-Touch AF
    • Optical Zoom
  • Discharge: Discharges NiMH batteries in the camera. (Be sure not to perform this function with alkaline batteries.)
  • Reset All: Resets all camera settings to their defaults.
