Canon SX420 Review -- First Impressions
by Jeremy Gray
Preview posted: 01/05/2016
Canon has announced the PowerShot SX420 IS, a budget-friendly long-zoom digital camera. While using a similar design to the SX410 IS that precedes it, the SX420 brings a number of improvements and features to this super-zoom compact line.
The SX420 utilizes the same 1/2.3-inch 20.0-megapixel CCD image sensor and DIGIC 4+ image processor as the SX410, but increases the maximum equivalent focal length of the lens from 960mm to 1008mm, increasing its optical zoom ratio from 40x to 42x. The 24-1008mm equivalent lens has a maximum aperture range of f/3.5-6.6, which is just a touch slower than the SX410's f/6.3 maximum aperture at the telephoto end, because of the slightly longer lens. Another new feature is the inclusion of Wi-Fi and NFC capabilities, allowing users to easily share and transfer images wirelessly.
Using the same Optical Image Stabilizer as the previous model, the SX420 IS will be able to capture sharp images even at over 1000mm (eq.). The SX420 also includes a Smart Auto mode that intelligently chooses the proper settings and a wide variety of scene modes and filters to allow photographers to add their own creative flair to their images.
Save for the new wireless connection button, the SX420 is physically similar to its predecessor, with dimensions of 4.11 x 2.72 x 3.35 inches (104.4 x 69.1 x 85.1 millimeters) and a CIPA standard weight of 11.5 ounces (325 grams). The camera has an ergonomic front grip, a 3" TFT LCD display with approximately 230,000 dots, and a built-in flash.
The SX420 has an ISO range of 100-1600, a shutter speed range of 1-1/4000s (up to 15s in Long Shutter Mode), and a 9-point TTL autofocus system. Additionally, it includes the 'ECO Mode' of the SX410 which improves battery life from 195 shots to 260 shots. Video recording is also offered at a maximum resolution of 720p at 25fps (or standard-definition VGA video at 30fps), which is the same as the predecessor. However, the camera does get update to use MP4 video format instead of MOV, which makes video files easier to playback on mobile devices.
The Canon SX420 IS will become available in February 2016 for an estimated retail price of US$299.99 and will be offered in both a matte black color or a bright red option.
