Why We Like the Canon EOS R6 Mark II

The EOS R6 Mark II uses a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, offering a resolution bump over the original EOS R6’s 20.1MP sensor. That extra resolution gives you more flexibility when cropping images, while the full-frame sensor helps maintain image quality in challenging lighting. For photographers who regularly shoot weddings, events, portraits, or wildlife, the camera offers a useful balance of resolution and low-light capability.

Speed is another major selling point. The R6 Mark II can shoot bursts at up to 40fps with its electronic shutter or 12fps with its mechanical shutter, helping you capture decisive moments in fast-moving scenes. It also includes a RAW burst mode with pre-shooting, which can record images from before you fully press the shutter. This is particularly useful for unpredictable action, although rolling-shutter distortion can be a consideration when using the electronic shutter with fast-moving subjects.

Canon’s autofocus system detects and tracks subjects such as people, animals, and vehicles, helping maintain focus as they move through the frame. The camera is equally capable on the video side, recording 4K at up to 60fps and Full HD at high frame rates for slow-motion footage. In-body image stabilization helps reduce camera shake during handheld shooting, and the dual UHS-II SD card slots support backup recording and more flexible file management for professional work.

What to Consider Before Buying

The EOS R6 Mark II doesn’t have an active cooling fan, so long recording sessions can be affected by heat and the camera’s operating limits. Actual recording times depend on resolution, frame rate, ambient temperature, and how the camera has been used. If you regularly record extended video sessions, check Canon’s recording-time guidance for your intended settings before buying.

Lens selection is also worth considering. The camera uses Canon’s RF mount, and autofocus compatibility with third-party lenses depends on the specific lens and firmware. Canon has historically had a more restrictive RF-mount licensing environment than some competing systems, but it would be inaccurate to say third-party autofocus lenses are universally unsupported. Check compatibility for any Sigma, Tamron, or other third-party lens you’re considering, and factor the cost of suitable lenses into your budget.
