Why We Like the SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD

The Extreme Portable SSD combines fast transfer speeds with a compact design. The version described in this deal offers sequential read speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000MB/s, making it considerably faster than conventional portable hard drives. That performance is useful when transferring large photo libraries, backing up video projects, or moving files between computers.

Durability is another selling point. Unlike mechanical hard drives, SSDs have no spinning platters or moving read heads, making them better suited to frequent transport. The drive features a rugged exterior designed to withstand accidental drops, while its compact form makes it easy to slip into a pocket or camera bag. It’s a practical storage companion for photographers and videographers who regularly move files between locations.

The USB-C connection makes it convenient to use with compatible laptops, desktop computers, tablets, and other devices. It supports Windows and macOS systems, along with compatible mobile devices. Whether you’re backing up RAW photos, transferring finished video projects, or keeping additional files on hand while traveling, the 2TB capacity gives you plenty of room for your everyday storage needs.

What to Consider Before Buying

Advertised transfer speeds represent peak sequential performance under suitable conditions, not guaranteed speeds throughout every transfer. Your actual results depend on the computer’s USB interface, cable, file sizes, and workload. Large sustained writes can also slow down as the drive’s cache fills, so transferring hundreds of gigabytes at once may take longer than its headline specifications suggest.

The drive can also become warm during extended heavy transfers, and performance may vary with operating temperature and workload. If you regularly move enormous video files or work directly from external storage, consider a higher-performance SSD and make sure your computer supports its advertised connection speed. Finally, remember that an external SSD is not a substitute for a separate backup; keep another copy of important files whenever possible.
