Panasonic LUMIX S1RII Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera

The LUMIX S1IIE hybrid camera (photo/video), is the ideal photography camera for content creation. It features a 24.1MP BSI CMOS full-frame sensor paired with LUMIX’s…

Why We Like the Panasonic Lumix S1RII

The Lumix S1RII’s 44.3MP sensor captures detailed images with plenty of resolution for large prints and substantial cropping. For scenes where maximum detail matters, its High Resolution mode combines multiple exposures captured with sensor-shift technology into a composite image of up to 177MP. This can reveal additional fine detail in suitable scenes, particularly landscapes, architecture, and studio subjects.

However, the High Resolution mode is not a substitute for the camera’s standard shooting mode in every situation. Because the final image combines multiple captures, movement between frames can introduce artifacts, making the feature most useful for relatively static subjects.

The camera also features advanced autofocus with subject recognition for people, animals, birds, and vehicles. This makes it more versatile than a camera designed exclusively for static, high-resolution photography, particularly when shooting wildlife, sports, or other fast-moving subjects.

Beyond stills, the S1RII supports 8K video recording, making it an option for creators who want detailed footage and flexibility when reframing or producing lower-resolution deliverables. Its hybrid design brings together high-resolution photography and advanced video tools in one camera body.

Panasonic has also made the body lighter than the original Lumix S1R while retaining a substantial grip and practical physical controls. The focus-mode switch provides direct access to focusing options, and the shutter curtain automatically closes when the camera is switched off to help protect the sensor from dust during lens changes.

What to Consider Before Buying

High-resolution images and advanced video recordings can consume substantial storage space. If you regularly shoot bursts, use the 177MP High Resolution mode, or record high-bitrate video, you’ll want fast, high-capacity memory cards and a reliable system for backing up files. The camera supports CFexpress Type B and SD cards, with the appropriate card type depending on your recording format and performance requirements.

The High Resolution mode also has practical limitations: moving subjects and changing scenes can reduce its usefulness. For sports, wildlife, or other action photography, the standard 44.3MP shooting mode is generally the more practical choice.

Finally, extended high-resolution video recording can place significant demands on power and thermal management. If your work involves long, uninterrupted takes, check the camera’s recording limits for your chosen format and consider external power and cooling requirements. A dedicated cinema camera may be more suitable for some continuous-production workflows.
