Why We Like the DJI Osmo Action 4

The Osmo Action 4 uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor designed to deliver good image quality in challenging lighting conditions. It records 4K video at up to 120fps, 2.7K at up to 120fps, and 1080p at up to 240fps, giving you plenty of flexibility for slow-motion footage. It can also capture 10MP still photos in JPEG or RAW.

For creators who want more control over their footage, the camera supports 10-bit color and DJI’s D-Log M color profile. These features provide more flexibility when color grading videos in post-production. Its quick-release magnetic mounting system also makes it easy to switch between compatible mounts and accessories.

DJI’s RockSteady stabilization helps smooth out footage during activities such as running, cycling, and hiking. For more demanding movement, 360-degree HorizonSteady helps keep the horizon level. The camera also has front and rear touchscreens, making it easier to frame shots and adjust settings whether you’re filming yourself or recording what’s ahead.

The Osmo Action 4 is waterproof down to 18 meters (59 feet) without an additional case, and an optional waterproof housing extends that rating to 60 meters (197 feet). It’s also rated to operate in temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F), making it suitable for cold-weather adventures.

What to Consider Before Buying

The Osmo Action 4 requires the DJI Mimo smartphone app for initial activation and setup. That’s worth keeping in mind if you prefer cameras that can be configured entirely on the device. Its 10MP still-photo resolution is also relatively modest, so it’s better suited to video-focused users than those who want an action camera to double as a high-resolution still camera.

Also, remember that the 60-meter waterproof rating requires the separately sold waterproof housing. The camera’s built-in waterproofing is rated to 18 meters, which is already plenty for many recreational underwater activities.

At $239, the DJI Osmo Action 4 Standard Combo is a compelling option if you want a rugged action camera with 4K/120fps recording, effective stabilization, and useful underwater capabilities.
