Godox has just launched a new twin lighting system designed specifically for macro photography. The Godox Flexible Macro Twin Light MA2 features two flexible arms with built-in LED lights and can also control multiple small flash units.
Flexible Twin Lighting
The Flexible Macro Twin Light MA2 uses a controller that mounts directly onto the camera’s hot shoe. The built-in LED lights can be controlled from the controller, although Godox has not provided guide number or lumen specifications, suggesting that they are primarily intended as modeling lights for focusing and video rather than as the main source of illumination.
Users can independently adjust the brightness of the two LED lights from 1% to 100%. The color temperature can also be adjusted between 2800K and 6500K, while the LEDs have a TLCI rating of 97 and CRI of 96.
Multiple Flash Support
The more interesting feature is the ability to mount small flashes onto the two flexible arms. Each arm has four hot shoe mounts, and Godox demonstrates the system with four iM20 mini flashes attached to the arms.
The MA2 is also compatible with the iM22, iT20, and iT22 flash units. Each flexible arm can support a total load of up to 90 grams, giving macro photographers plenty of flexibility when positioning multiple light sources around a subject.
The controller groups the flashes into A and B, corresponding to the two flexible arms. Photographers can adjust the color temperature of each flash between 2800K and 6500K and turn individual flashes on or off depending on the desired lighting setup.
The MA2 also supports S1/S2 triggering for manual flash setups as well as TTL operation with pre-flash. This gives photographers the option of using the system with different flash configurations depending on how much control they want over their lighting.
Flexible Diffusion
Godox also includes a Magnetic Diffuser Panel that attaches to the controller and helps produce softer light when using a flash. The diffuser itself is flexible and can be shaped according to the photographer’s preference.
For macro photography, having the ability to position and diffuse multiple light sources can be particularly useful. Small subjects can easily produce harsh shadows, so being able to move the lights around the lens gives photographers considerably more control over illumination.
Built-In Battery
The Flexible Macro Twin Light MA2 has a built-in 3300mAh lithium battery. Godox says it can operate for approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes at 100% brightness, while a full recharge through USB-C takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The entire system weighs just 340 grams, excluding accessories. The relatively low weight should make it practical for photographers who need to carry the lighting system around while shooting outdoors.
Optional Macro Accessories
Godox is also introducing several accessories to complement the MA2. The MCL-250 Macro Conversion Lens provides 2.5x magnification and can be attached to filter threads ranging from 49mm to 67mm.
There is also the MCL-D Macro Conversion Lens Diffuser, which provides additional diffusion coverage. Godox is offering an optional Diffuser Box for the flashes as well, providing softer and more even illumination.
The combination of flexible arms, built-in LEDs, multiple flash support, and optional diffusion accessories makes the MA2 an interesting lighting system for macro photographers. It provides considerably more flexibility than simply mounting a single flash directly onto the camera.
Pricing and Availability
The Godox Flexible Macro Twin Light MA2 is now available for purchase from B&H Photo for $79.
