GoPro has officially announced the Mission 1 series, marking a clear shift beyond traditional action cameras and into the compact cinema space.
After weeks of teasing its new GP3 processor, the company is positioning the Mission 1 lineup as a more advanced, video-focused system—one that pushes into territory typically occupied by larger, more expensive cameras.
“With the launch of the MISSION 1 Series, GoPro is entering the premium end of the digital imaging market in a significant way,” said Pablo Lema, GoPro’s Senior Vice President of Product. “The combination of our new 50 megapixel 1″ sensor and ultra-efficient GP3 processor sets a new performance bar for compact cinema cameras, enabling resolutions, frame rates, low-light performance, runtimes and thermal capabilities never seen before in cameras this small. We expect the MISSION 1 Series to expand the creative potential of filmmakers and creators around the world, similar to the impact GoPro made when it pioneered the category for durable, ultra-capable compact cameras.”
A New Direction for GoPro
The Mission 1 series includes three models: the Mission 1 Pro, Mission 1, and an upcoming Mission 1 ILS with a Micro Four Thirds mount.
The Mission 1 Pro sits at the top, offering up to 8K60p video and 50-megapixel stills, while the standard Mission 1 trims that down slightly to 8K30p and 4K120p. The ILS version, expected later this year, will introduce interchangeable lenses—something entirely new for GoPro.
GoPro describes the lineup as its most advanced cameras to date, aimed at creators who want high-end video features in a compact, rugged form factor.
1-Inch Sensor and GP3 Power
All models in the series feature a new 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor paired with the GP3 processor. According to GoPro, this combination is designed to deliver improved low-light performance, dynamic range, and overall image quality.
The company says the sensor includes larger native and fused pixels, contributing to better performance in challenging lighting conditions. GoPro says the sensor on the Mission 1 is 25.4% larger than the one on the DJI Osmo 6 and 43.8% larger than that of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2.
High-End Video Capabilities
The Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 Pro ILS support 8K recording at up to 60 frames per second and 4K at up to 240fps in standard 16:9. It also offers open gate recording in a 4:3 aspect ratio, giving more flexibility for reframing in post.
Additional modes include high-speed recording up to 960fps in short bursts at 1080p, along with high bitrate recording up to 240Mbps, 10-bit color, HLG HDR, and GP-Log2 support.
The base model Mission 1 offers a slightly scaled-back set of specs but still retains many of the same core features. It can shoot 8K30, 4K120, and 1080p240 16:9 capture, along with 4K120 and 1440p240 4:3 video. It also supports 4K120 Open Gate video capture.
Built for Creators and Tough Conditions
GoPro is leaning into its roots with rugged design and usability. The Mission 1 series is waterproof up to 66 feet natively and up to 196 feet with a dive housing.
It features a 2.59-inch rear OLED screen and a smaller front display, along with a redesigned lens system offering a 159-degree field of view. The front element includes a hydrophobic coating to help shed water.
There are also multiple shooting modes tailored for different scenarios, including vlog and underwater modes with scene detection and machine learning enhancements.
Audio, Battery, and Extras
The cameras include a four-microphone array with 32-bit float audio recording, along with support for Bluetooth wireless microphones.
Battery life varies depending on usage, with GoPro claiming up to five hours of recording at 1080p and over three hours at 4K. The new Enduro 2 battery supports faster charging and improved efficiency.
Pricing and Availability
The GoPro Mission 1 Pro is set to open for preorders on May 21, with shipping expected to begin on May 28.
GoPro has not yet announced final pricing, citing ongoing supply challenges with flash memory. More details are expected closer to launch.
