SG-Image has expanded its lineup of affordable autofocus lenses with the launch of the AF 35mm F/2.2 for the Leica L mount. The compact full-frame prime joins the existing Sony E and Nikon Z versions, giving Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica users another budget-friendly autofocus option.

The AF 35mm F/2.2 is also available in a retro-inspired Classic Edition, though the newly announced L-mount version features the standard modern design.

Compact and Affordable Standard Prime

The biggest selling point of the SG-Image AF 35mm F/2.2 is its affordable price. At under $160, it offers an inexpensive entry into full-frame prime lenses for photographers looking to shoot street photography, travel, environmental portraits, and documentary work.

The versatile 35mm focal length provides a natural wide perspective that is well suited to visual storytelling while remaining compact enough for everyday carry.

Simple Optical Design

The lens features an optical construction of seven elements in five groups, which SG-Image says is designed to deliver good image clarity and contrast while keeping the lens compact.

A nine-bladed aperture diaphragm works together with the f/2.2 maximum aperture to produce smooth, natural-looking background blur while also providing improved low-light performance compared to slower kit zooms.

While SG-Image has not disclosed the type of autofocus motor used in the lens, it supports Eye AF, subject detection, and subject tracking on compatible Leica L-mount camera bodies. The lens can focus as close as 0.35 meters, allowing photographers to capture tighter compositions and close-up details.

Designed for Compact Full-Frame Cameras

One of the highlights of the AF 35mm F/2.2 is its compact pancake-style design. The lens measures just 36.2mm in length and weighs only 163g, making it an ideal companion for smaller full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Despite its lightweight construction, the lens features an all-metal barrel for improved durability. It accepts 52mm filters, and photographers can also purchase an optional square lens hood for added flare protection and a classic appearance.

The compact size makes it particularly well suited for cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix S9 and Sigma BF, where portability is a key advantage. The lens is available in Black and Silver finishes, allowing users to match the look of their camera body.
