Nothing has unveiled two new mid-range smartphones: the Nothing Phone 4a and the Nothing Phone 4a Pro. The London-based brand says the new devices are designed to inject a bit more personality into a smartphone market that often feels repetitive.

ā€œWe started Nothing to break that monotony and make tech more fun,ā€ said Carl Pei, founder of Nothing, in an interview with Reuters. ā€œWe’re giving our portfolio a splash of colour, and secondly, we’re advancing some of our AI initiatives.ā€

Updated Design and New Colors

The Phone 4a and 4a Pro introduce several design changes compared to previous generations. Most notably, the phones move away from the fully translucent rear panels that had become a signature of earlier Nothing devices.

Instead, the transparent design is now limited primarily to the camera module, while the rest of the rear panel adopts a more traditional finish. The phones are available in a range of new colors, including black, silver, and orange.

Another notable change involves the company’s signature Glyph lighting system. On the 4a Pro, the Glyph interface has been repositioned and integrated into the transparent camera module housing rather than spanning the entire back panel.

The rear panel itself also moves to an aluminum construction instead of the glass used in earlier models.

A ā€œPro 3 Camera Systemā€

The camera system is one of the biggest highlights of the Phone 4a Pro. The device features what Nothing calls a ā€œPro 3 Camera System.ā€

The main camera uses a 50-megapixel sensor with a Type 1/1.56 sensor sourced from Sony, paired with a 24mm equivalent F/1.9 lens.

It is joined by a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with an 80mm equivalent focal length and a Type 1/2.75 sensor. The system also includes an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera with a 15mm equivalent lens and a 120-degree field of view.

The telephoto lens supports up to 140x digital zoom, which Nothing says is the longest zoom capability ever offered on one of its smartphones and among the highest in the mid-range segment.

Ultra XDR and AI-Powered Imaging

The Phone 4a Pro uses Nothing’s TrueLens Engine 4 imaging pipeline, which combines multi-frame RAW processing with 12-layer AI segmentation to enhance image detail and dynamic range.

The phone’s Ultra XDR mode captures up to 13 RAW images at varying exposures and merges them into a single frame designed to reveal more natural highlight and shadow detail.

The system can also create short Ultra XDR motion clips, capturing roughly 90 frames over three seconds. For video, the camera supports extended 4K recording at 30 frames per second while using the same processing to maintain detail across challenging lighting conditions.

Nothing says the camera system also includes professional presets, adjustable settings, AI Photo Eraser tools, and customizable watermarks to make it easier for users to create and share content.

Display and Performance

Only the camera module on the Nothing Phone 4a Pro has the see-through design.

The Phone 4a Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, an eight-core chipset that includes a prime core running up to 2.8GHz, three performance cores up to 2.4GHz, and four efficiency cores at 1.8GHz. Graphics duties are handled by the Qualcomm Adreno 722 GPU.

On the front, the phone features a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution and a pixel density of 460 pixels per inch. The screen supports a fast 144Hz refresh rate and can reach up to 5000 nits of peak brightness for HDR content.

The device also includes a 32-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

Build and Durability

The Phone 4a Pro measures just 7.95mm thick, making it relatively slim compared to many smartphones in its class. The aluminum body helps distribute heat during heavy workloads.

It also carries an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance and is tested to withstand water immersion up to 25 centimeters for approximately 25 minutes.

Pricing and Availability

The Nothing Phone 4a Pro starts at $499 for the configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. A higher-end version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is priced at $599.

Pre-orders will open on March 13, with the smartphone scheduled to begin shipping on March 27.
