Sony has announced the ECM-W5, a new wireless microphone system designed for video creators and small production teams. The kit includes two transmitters and a receiver, with features such as 32-bit float recording, 64GB of internal storage, four-channel audio support, and a claimed wireless transmission range of up to 500 meters.

Sony says the system was developed around the needs of modern content creators, particularly those working with small crews in dynamic environments where reliable audio capture is essential.

“Video creators are working in increasingly dynamic environments, often with smaller teams and less room for error,” said Yang Cheng, senior vice president of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics. “With the ECM-W5, we focused on the real workflow challenges creators face: moving freely, managing multiple voices, staying in sync, and protecting every take, so they can spend more time focused on the story and less time managing audio.”

32-Bit Float Recording and Internal Storage

The ECM-W5 supports 32-bit float audio recording, which provides greater flexibility when adjusting recording levels in post-production and helps preserve audio that might otherwise clip. When connected to compatible cameras through Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe, the system can transmit 32-bit audio directly to the camera for recording alongside video in a single file, eliminating the need for a separate audio file or external recorder.

Each transmitter features 64GB of internal storage, which Sony says can accommodate approximately 90 hours of 32-bit audio. This provides a backup recording option if the wireless connection is interrupted.

The microphones support audio recording at up to 96kHz and include 3.5mm microphone inputs for external microphones, including lavalier models. Sony’s optional ECM-L1 external microphone provides another option for different recording setups.

Extended Wireless Range and Reliable Transmission

Sony claims the ECM-W5 offers a line-of-sight transmission range of up to 500 meters, which the company says is three times more stable than the ECM-W3. The system is designed to reduce dropouts and maintain a reliable connection in environments with congested radio frequencies.

The receiver also supports low-latency transmission for applications where real-time audio matters, including live streaming.

For monitoring, the ECM-W5 supports cable-free audio monitoring with compatible Sony wireless headphones. Compatible headphone models can also serve as wireless microphone inputs.

Four-Channel Audio and Timecode Support

The receiver supports recording up to four audio channels in-camera, making the system suitable for interviews, panel discussions, event coverage, and other productions involving multiple speakers. Users can add separately available ECM-W5T transmitters to expand their setup.

The system also supports timecode functionality to help synchronize recordings from multiple sources, which can simplify editing workflows involving several cameras or audio devices.

When connected through the Multi Interface Shoe, compatible Sony cameras can power the receiver and support linked power control. A supplied USB-C cable allows connections to smartphones and PCs, while Bluetooth connectivity enables the transmitter to connect directly for wireless recording.

Compact Design With Long Battery Life

The ECM-W5 transmitter offers up to 11 hours of operating time. Sony also says the system has dust- and moisture-resistant construction for use in challenging shooting conditions.

The receiver and two transmitters fit into the supplied charging case, making the kit easier to transport between shoots.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony ECM-W5 Wireless Microphone Kit is priced at $399.99 and is available for pre-order from B&H Photo, with shipping expected to begin in mid-November 2026.

Sony will also sell the components separately. The ECM-W5R Wireless Audio Receiver will cost $189.99, while the ECM-W5T Wireless Microphone Transmitter will cost $119.99. Both are expected to become available in mid-November.
