Sony has registered a new camera in China, fueling speculation that the company could be preparing to launch the long-awaited A7S IV. The camera is identified by the code WW261362 and reportedly supports Wi-Fi 6.

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the registration lists Sony Japan as the applicant. The combination of the registration details and Wi-Fi 6 support has led the site to speculate that the camera could be a mid- to high-end model.

Is This the Sony A7S IV?

Sony Alpha Rumors reports that entry-level cameras and models in Sony’s FX cinema lineup are typically registered by Sony China or Sony Thailand, while higher-end models are registered by Sony Japan. Based on this distinction, the site believes the new camera could be the A7S IV.

Other possibilities include successors to the Sony A9 III, A7C II, A7C R, or A1 II. However, Sony has generally followed several-year product cycles for its higher-end models.

The A9 III, A7C II, and A7C R were all announced in 2023, while the A1 II arrived in 2024. This makes the A7S IV one of the more obvious candidates based on the current product cycle, although there is no confirmation from Sony.

Rumored Specifications

Sony Alpha Rumors also reports several possible specifications for the unannounced camera, although these remain unconfirmed.

The camera is rumored to use a 16-megapixel stacked full-frame sensor similar to the one reportedly used in the Sony FX5. It could also feature a built-in 9.44-million-dot electronic viewfinder, along with the same image processor, in-body image stabilization, and autofocus system as Sony’s latest high-resolution Alpha cameras.

Unlike the FX5 cinema camera, the rumored model is reportedly expected to support still photography and would not include the FX5’s internal RAW codecs.

The camera is also rumored to feature an integrated EVF rather than the optional viewfinder design used by the FX5. It would reportedly use Sony’s standard Alpha menu system rather than the interface found on the company’s Venice-based cinema cameras.

DRAM Supply Could Affect the Launch

The report also raises concerns about memory supply. Sony Alpha Rumors speculates that increasing demand for DRAM from AI companies could affect the production and launch schedule of the new camera.

The same issue has reportedly contributed to difficulties surrounding the availability of Sony’s FX5 cinema camera. However, any connection between broader memory shortages and the timing of this rumored camera remains speculation.

Pricing and Availability

Sony has not announced the new camera, and there is currently no confirmed pricing or release date.

Sony Alpha Rumors speculates that the camera could have been registered ahead of a possible November launch. However, the site also suggests that supply constraints could push the announcement or release back.

For now, the camera’s identity and specifications remain unconfirmed, with the A7S IV being only one possible candidate for Sony’s new registration.
