Yashica is bringing some of its photographic history into the digital age with the Y16, a new compact digital camera inspired by a 1959 Yashica film camera of the same name.
The Yashica Y16 is still in development as reported by Digital Camera Watch, but the company has released several teaser images along with some details about its design and features.
Yashica Y16 Features a 12MP Sensor
The upcoming Y16 will feature a 12-megapixel image sensor capable of capturing both photos and video. Yashica has not yet revealed the sensor’s size, although it is expected to be relatively small based on the company’s other recent digital cameras.
The company has also not announced which lens will be used. Based on the camera’s design and the positioning of the lens, it could feature a relatively wide field of view similar to the main camera on a smartphone, although Yashica has not confirmed the focal length.
One of the more distinctive features is the Xenon flash. This is particularly fitting for a camera inspired by a vintage film model and could help the Y16 produce the distinctive look associated with direct on-camera flash photography. More recent Yashica cameras, such as the Tank, use an LED flash instead.

A Digital Camera With a Vintage Design
The Y16 takes on the rectangular shape of the original camera from nearly seven decades ago. The front features the flash, optical viewfinder, and lens, while the top has a large mode dial and shutter-release button.
The rear of the camera features a small display along with what appears to be a motion-sensing viewfinder.
Yashica has not yet revealed the full specifications of the camera, so details such as its video capabilities, storage, battery life, and lens specifications remain unknown.
Y16 vs. Other Retro Digital Cameras
The Y16 arrives as interest in small retro-styled digital cameras continues to grow. The camera also follows the recent launch of the Fujifilm Instax Pal 2, another compact digital camera that combines relatively simple specifications with a retro-inspired design.
While the two cameras have different approaches and features, the Y16 could appeal to the same audience looking for a small, fun digital camera rather than a traditional interchangeable-lens system.
For cameras in this category, the design and shooting experience can be just as important as technical specifications. The Y16’s final image quality and performance will become clearer once the camera is closer to release.

Pricing and Availability
The Yashica Y16 does not yet have an official price. Yashica says preorders will open in October, and the camera will be available in seven different colors.
The company is expected to reveal additional specifications and pricing as development progresses.
