  • Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

4 out of 10 points and not recommended
    Convenience
    Image quality

I have recently discovered the superior image quality available by owning a prime lens (w/out image stabilization). Had I known that the difference would be so significant, I would not have bought this zoom lens.

  • Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

9 out of 10 points and recommended
    Fast & quiet autofocus
    Ordinary image quality

I just finished a comparison of this lens and the Canon 17-85 IS and the Canon 10-22. Using a focal length of 17 mm and f5.6, this lens is a little better than the 17-85 IS but not by much. When compared to the 10-22, the 17-40 is definitely better. All in all, the Canon 17-40 is a good lens (at least when mounted on a tripod and using mirror lockup). I'm not sure that its worth $750.00 though. For those of you who don't yet own the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro, it is unbelievably sharp !!! Try it....you'll like it.

    Great Price & Unbelievably Sharp
    None

I think that this lens is sharper than the "blur index" graph shows. It really is brutal when used for portraits. It is by far the sharpest lens that I have ever used.
