New PCT-100 PC Flash Adapter allows Minolta's SLR-style cameras to control studio lighting systems and more...

Regular readers of our reviews will know that we like to see digital cameras offer more than just proprietary connections for external flash - many photographers have existing flash units that they like or are familiar with, not to mention studio flash systems and the suchlike. Minolta has addressed this issue for their DiMAGE 5 and 7-series digital cameras with the announcement of a new accessory, the PCT-100 PC flash adapter.

The PCT-100 mounts on the proprietary Minolta hot shoe the cameras feature, and offers a standard PC flash terminal compatible with both center-negative and center-positive polarities, which allows the camera to trigger a third-party flash, or a studio lighting system.

The PCT-100 PC Flash Adapter, which weighs 1.1 ounces (30 grams), and has dimensions of 1.3 x 0.6 x 2 inches (33 x 16 x 52mm), is pictured below. It is powered by a single CR2032 3V lithium battery, which provides for 10,000+ shutter releases, and comes bundled with a free update CD-ROM for DiMAGE 5 / 7 owners. Minolta's press info doesn't mention pricing or availability, and we couldn't see any mention of the adapter on the Minolta website. Once we have this info, we'll update this news item...
