Nikon Inc. has released updated versions of the Transfer and ViewNX applications used with its digital SLRs and Coolpix point-and-shoot cameras.

Nikon Transfer v1.5.0 and Nikon ViewNX 1.4.0 both add support for all of the new camera models the company has announced in the last week - the D300s and D3000 digital SLRs, and the Coolpix S570, S640, S70 and S1000pj compact point-and-shoot digicams.

In addition, ViewNX 1.4.0 fixes several problems with printing images and corrects an issue with color casts on images converted from Raw to JPEG format. It also squashes a bug with Wikipedia keyword acquisition for geotagged images shot in western longitudes, and makes a couple of tweaks to the Share Settings dialog used to upload images to Nikon's my Picturetown photo sharing website. Transfer v1.5.0 meanwhile adds a new Date Shot folder naming option, based on the creation date of image files. There's also a new option to use an existing folder if one with the same name exists in the primary or backup destinations.

Following is the full list of changes in Nikon ViewNX from the release notes:

  • Adds support for D300s, D3000, Coolpix S570, S640, S70, and S1000pj

  • A Send notification mail to my address (Email ID) checkbox has been added to the Share Settings dialog displayed with the my Picturetown upload function.

  • New Album is now displayed in the Subject (Required) text box in the Share Settings dialog displayed with the my Picturetown upload function.

  • An issue that prevented printing at paper sizes of A2 (420 x 594 mm) and larger has been resolved.
However, images may not print correctly if the Rotate to fit box in the Print dialog is checked.

  • Error message "ViewNX has encountered a problem and needs to close" was displayed and ViewNX quit unexpectedly when attempting to print images after opening the Page Setup dialog from the File menu. This issue has been resolved.

  • Errors in the explanation of axial color aberration compensation in ViewNX Help have been corrected.

  • When Index Print was selected from the Print As: pulldown menu in the Print dialog and the back or next arrow for the print preview was clicked, a portion of the preview image was displayed as completely white, and the printed image exhibited the same completely white portion. This issue has been resolved.

  • When RAW (NEF/NRW) images were converted to JPEG format from the Convert Files dialog, some converted images exhibited a red cast in thumbnail. This issue has been resolved.

  • Windows - An issue that prevented accurate acquisition of Wikipedia keywords for images captured at western longitudes in the southern hemisphere using the GeoTag function has been resolved.

In full, the release notes for the latest version of Nikon Transfer list the following changes

  • Adds support for D300s, D3000, Coolpix S570, S640, S70, and S1000pj

  • A Date Shot option has been added to the Index pulldown menu in the Folder Naming dialog, opened when Create subfolder for each transfer in the Primary Destination panel under Options is selected and the Edit button is clicked to change the folder naming rule.
However, the Date Shot used in this case is not the shooting date recorded in image file Exif information, but rather the date the file was created. Therefore, if the images were captured while the camera’s clock was not accurately set, or if creation date information is overwritten, images will be transferred to a folder named using a different date than the shooting date information stored in image Exif data.

  • A Use subfolder with same name if it exists option is now available when Create subfolder for each transfer in the Primary Destination or Backup Destination panel under Options is selected.

The updates for Nikon Transfer v1.5.0 and Nikon ViewNX 1.4.0 can both be downloaded for Windows or Mac OS systems from Nikon's support website.
