Commercial photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Joel Grimes recently took to the field in Phoenix, Arizona for an outdoor portrait session.

In the video below, you can see him utilizing an F.J. Westscott 24" Rapid Box Beauty Dish. Designed by Grimes himself, it's a travel-friendly softbox designed for beauty and fashion photography. More information on the product can be found here.

Instead of overpowering the bright daytime sun, Joel opts to utilize it as an edge light on the model's shoulder and then use a strobe with the Rapid Box Beauty Dish to light her face. "Natural light, generally, is not very flattering. So the job of the photographer is to create light that falls perfectly on the face to really bring out the best in your subject," says Grimes.

Using a Canon 5DS R and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens Grimes captured a variety of beautiful portraits.

F.J. Westscott also published another video with Joel Grimes which you can see below that will show you different lighting techniques you can achieve using a beauty dish.
