Overview

The 35mm focal length is a classic choice for photographers who value versatility and visual storytelling. Viltrox takes this familiar focal length and gives it the Pro treatment with the full-frame AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro. I spent a few weeks testing the lens, taking it to the streets of my city for photo walks during the day and at night. Here’s what I learned from using it in the field.

Construction and Handling

The Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro is a beast compared with other fast primes designed for street photography. As someone accustomed to the relatively compact Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 SE, using this Viltrox was a significant change.

Weighing 780g and measuring 112.5mm long, the AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro is a substantial piece of glass. Its all-metal barrel and weather-sealed construction give it a robust feel, although they also contribute to its considerable weight. This isn’t a lens I’d choose for extended photo walks or one I’d want hanging around my neck for hours.

Compared with my older F-mount primes used with the Nikon FTZ adapter, the Viltrox feels noticeably heavier and longer. It’s not uncomfortably unwieldy, but it is chunky, to say the least. That said, it’s still more manageable than the Viltrox 135mm f/1.8 LAB, which is an absolute beast in its own right.

Despite its size, the lens balances surprisingly well on my equally hefty Nikon Zf. It feels solid in the hand, and both the focus and aperture rings are responsive and easy to locate without looking. The aperture ring can be clicked for tactile feedback or declicked for video work. Switching to the camera-controlled “A” position also requires a deliberate movement, helping prevent accidental changes to the aperture setting.

One thing that initially concerned me was the thud I heard when turning off the camera. Something inside the lens appears to shift when the camera powers down. I noticed the same behavior with my Viltrox 135mm f/1.8 LAB, so it may not be unique to this lens. It’s still an unusual sensation, although the sound alone doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem.

Autofocus

Autofocus is very responsive, capturing moving subjects with precision.
Autofocus is very responsive, capturing moving subjects with precision.

The AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro uses dual VCM motors for fast, quiet autofocus. During my low-light shooting sessions, I found it consistently accurate, delivering reliable focus when I needed it.

The lens also handled moving subjects well when paired with my Nikon Zf. Subject tracking was responsive, and I didn’t encounter significant difficulties keeping up with the action.

During a nighttime shoot at a busy night market, the lens didn’t struggle with autofocus or subject tracking. It didn’t hunt or miss focus any more frequently than my Nikon Z 40mm f/2 in the same conditions. It was also impressively responsive, acquiring focus almost instantaneously.

I also tested the lens on my older Nikon Z6 and noticed no meaningful drop in autofocus speed or accuracy. Overall, autofocus performance was excellent on both Nikon Z cameras, making the AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro a reliable option for shooting in challenging lighting conditions.

Image Quality

The lens is sharp even when shooting wide open at F/1.4 during both daytime and nighttime
The lens is sharp even when shooting wide open at F/1.4 during both daytime and nighttime sessions.

In the field, the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro performed exceptionally well. During daytime shoots, images were already impressively sharp at f/1.4. Even when shooting backlit subjects, the lens maintained good sharpness and contrast.

In my testing, sharpness peaked around f/2.8, but there’s little reason to complain about its performance at the maximum aperture. Being able to shoot wide open without sacrificing much detail makes this lens particularly appealing for low-light photography.

The lens also controls aberrations, flare, and ghosting effectively. Producing noticeable lens flare proved surprisingly difficult during my shooting sessions, while color fringing remained well controlled when shooting against harsh light sources.

Nighttime images were equally impressive, with the lens delivering sharp results both wide open and stopped down. Thanks to the in-body image stabilization in my Nikon Zf, I was also able to capture reasonably sharp handheld images at shutter speeds as slow as 1/10 second. The lens itself lacks optical image stabilization, so these results depended on the camera’s IBIS rather than stabilization built into the lens.

Bokeh

The Viltrox AF 35mm F/1.4 PRO is made for shooting wide open, producing excellent bokeh quality and subject separation.

Fast f/1.4 lenses are made to be used wide open, and the AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro delivers pleasing background blur. Its 11-bladed aperture diaphragm produces nearly circular bokeh highlights toward the center of the frame, although a slight cat’s-eye effect appears in the corners.

Beyond the shape of the highlights, the overall rendering is smooth, with a pleasing transition from the subject to the background. Subject separation is strong, allowing people to stand out from their surroundings without the background becoming unnecessarily distracting.

Based on my shooting experience, bokeh is one of this lens’s strengths, particularly for environmental portraits and street photography where subject separation can make a significant difference.

Vignetting and Distortion

Vignetting and distortions are well controlled and hardly noticeable in daily shooting.

Vignetting is common among fast f/1.4 lenses, but the AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro keeps it relatively mild, even when shooting wide open. Personally, I don’t mind some corner darkening, and I often add it during post-processing anyway. It’s most noticeable when photographing plain backgrounds and is far less distracting in typical street scenes.

Distortion is also well controlled. Objects near the edges of the frame generally retain their shape, and I didn’t find distortion particularly problematic during my shooting sessions.

Overall Thoughts

I really like the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro as a street photography and low-light lens, particularly for environmental portraits. It delivers the features I’d want from a fast 35mm prime: responsive autofocus, excellent sharpness, pleasing bokeh, and robust construction with weather sealing.

Its biggest drawback is its size and weight. This isn’t the most discreet option for street photography, nor would it be my first choice for a long photo walk when portability matters.

Still, the lens offers an appealing combination of performance and build quality for photographers who want professional capabilities without necessarily paying premium first-party lens prices.

Should You Buy This Lens?

If you’re looking for an affordable 35mm f/1.4 with fast autofocus and excellent image quality, the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro deserves serious consideration.

I’d confidently recommend it for street photography, travel, portraits, events, and weddings, especially when shooting in challenging lighting conditions. It delivers sharp, contrasty images, focuses reliably, and has the solid construction expected of a lens intended for demanding use.

The weight and bulk are worth considering before buying, particularly if you prioritize a compact everyday setup. But if those compromises don’t bother you, the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro is a compelling addition to a photographer’s kit. I’d happily take it along on a trip or bring it to an event shoot.
