Viltrox has completed its full-frame F1.4 Pro lens lineup with the new AF 35mm F1.4 Pro. The fast prime joins the AF 50mm F1.4 Pro and AF 85mm F1.4 Pro, expanding the series to three focal lengths. It is available for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras.

Like the other lenses in the Pro series, the new 35mm prime combines a fast maximum aperture with a premium build and autofocus designed for demanding photography and video applications. Its 35mm-equivalent field of view on full-frame cameras makes it a versatile option for environmental portraits, street photography, travel, and documentary work.

Viltrox says the lens’s optical system delivers high resolving power and edge-to-edge sharpness, with detailed rendering intended to hold up under close inspection, cropping, and large-scale enlargement.

Optical Design and Bokeh

The AF 35mm F1.4 Pro uses 16 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical elements, three ED elements, and four high-refractive-index elements. According to Viltrox, the optical design balances sharpness and aberration control with a relatively compact form factor.

The aspherical elements are designed to help produce smooth bokeh, while the ED elements help control chromatic aberrations and color fringing. The lens also features an 11-blade aperture diaphragm, which is intended to produce rounded out-of-focus highlights.

Its F1.4 maximum aperture allows photographers to work in low-light environments while creating shallow depth of field and separating subjects from their backgrounds. This makes the lens suitable for portraits and other situations where background blur is an important part of the composition.

Dual HyperVCM Autofocus

Viltrox equips the lens with its Dual HyperVCM autofocus motor system, designed to deliver fast and accurate focusing. The lens supports eye and face detection when paired with compatible camera bodies.

Its minimum focusing distance is 0.3m, allowing photographers to work relatively close to their subjects for tighter compositions.

The lens is also designed with video production in mind. Viltrox says focus breathing is minimized to maintain a more consistent field of view during focus transitions. The lens is intended to deliver smooth transitions between near and distant subjects, while its optical design helps control distortion when shooting wider scenes.

Build Quality and Handling

The AF 35mm F1.4 Pro features a weather-sealed construction with rubber seals at key points to help protect against dust and moisture. Its exterior has a matte-black finish designed to resist scratches.

The lens weighs 760g for Sony E mount and 780g for Nikon Z mount. The Sony version measures 111mm long, while the Nikon Z version measures 112.5mm. Both versions accept standard 77mm filters.

Physical controls include a manual focus ring, an aperture ring, a customizable function button, and an AF/MF switch. The aperture ring can be clicked for tactile feedback or de-clicked for smoother, quieter adjustments during video recording.

A USB-C port at the rear of the lens mount allows for firmware updates.
