LIFE Magazine, one of America’s most influential photography publications, is returning to print 90 years after its debut. The relaunch will bring back the iconic title with a new quarterly print edition, a digital platform, and an expanded focus on video, documentaries, and live experiences.

Throughout its history, LIFE helped shape photojournalism and the careers of renowned photographers, including Robert Capa, Margaret Bourke-White, W. Eugene Smith, and Alfred Eisenstaedt. Its coverage of major events, public figures, and everyday life made it an influential visual record of the 20th century.

LIFE Returns With a New Print Edition

The new edition of LIFE is scheduled to arrive on November 23, marking 90 years since the magazine’s first issue in 1936. Titled Where Are We Now?, the 248-page issue will use an oversized 11-by-16-inch format, continuing the publication’s tradition of giving photography a prominent role.

The quarterly magazine will retail for $45 and be available through select bookstores and newsstands in the United States. Unlike traditional magazine models, the new LIFE will not carry conventional print advertising. Instead, the company plans to pursue selected brand partnerships across its print and digital platforms.

Alongside the print edition, LIFE will launch a free digital platform featuring stories, photography, documentaries, and video. The broader strategy aims to establish the title as a modern media brand that extends beyond its printed pages.

A New Chapter for an Iconic Photography Publication

Founded by Henry Luce in 1936, LIFE became known for its photo-driven coverage of news, culture, politics, and everyday life. At its peak in the 1960s, the magazine reportedly sold more than eight million copies each week.

The publication ceased regular print operations in April 2007, although special editions continued to appear on notable occasions. Its return follows an agreement announced two years ago between Bedford Media, led by Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner, and Dotdash Meredith to revive LIFE in print and digital formats.

Under the arrangement, Bedford Media will oversee editorial operations and business strategy, while Dotdash Meredith retains ownership of LIFE’s extensive photography and content archives. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Bedford Media says the editorial team will retain full editorial independence and creative control. Hugo Lindgren will serve as editor, with Richard Turley taking on the role of creative director.

A Business Model Beyond Traditional Print Advertising

The relaunch will use subscriptions and a founding membership program to support the publication. Membership benefits are expected to include annual issues, an exclusive profile book, curated items, and priority access to events.

By avoiding conventional print advertisements and expanding into digital storytelling and live experiences, LIFE is pursuing a different approach from the weekly magazine model that defined much of its history.

The new strategy also gives the publication opportunities to showcase its photographic archive and commission new work across multiple formats, potentially reaching readers who may not regularly buy print magazines.

Pricing and Availability

The first issue of the relaunched LIFE Magazine, Where Are We Now?, is scheduled for November 23, 2026, with a retail price of $45. The 248-page quarterly publication will be available at select U.S. bookstores and newsstands, alongside a free digital platform featuring photography, articles, documentaries, and video.

The relaunch marks a new chapter for a publication whose visual storytelling helped define modern photojournalism and preserve some of the most recognizable images of the past century.
