Version 2 will ship in the next couple of months; from today you can buy the current version and upgrade free...

Adobe Systems Inc. has today announced a major update to its consumer-oriented PhotoShop variant, Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.0. The latest version, which will ship in the third quarter of this year (ie. by the end of September), has a number of new and updated features. To quote the press release:
"Based on extensive customer research and feedback, key enhancements to Photoshop Elements 2.0 give users easier access to the tools they need to be more efficient and creative with their photos. Users can apply common lighting and color correction in a single dialog window while viewing the original side-by-side with the modified version. Instant access to help files and "how to" recipes is readily available by typing key words such as "red-eye" into a help window on the toolbar. With one-step to resize and attach images, sharing photos via email is now much easier; and a new file browser lets users preview, sort and organize images in thumbnail form -- all without opening the files.

Photoshop Elements 2.0 gives users superior editing capabilities with new color correction, compositing and creative tools. The Color Variations feature now includes helpful tips and an updated design, giving the user a preview of real-time color adjustments prior to applying. The new Selection Brush masks unwanted areas of a photo for precise editing. New paintbrush options simulate oils, watercolors, charcoal, pastels, and different canvas textures so users can add creative touches to their photos. Also, users can capture individual frames from video clips, which are saved as still images for editing and sharing electronically.

Photoshop Elements solves the common problem of sharing multiple photos. Users can now create slideshows in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) that can be displayed on any device that supports the Adobe Acrobat® Reader® software. This includes Palm handhelds, Pocket PC and any system running the Windows® or Mac operating system."
PhotoShop Elements runs on either PC or Macintosh computers, and has an estimated street price of $99. As with the previous version, users of Elements 1.0, PhotoShop LE, PhotoDeluxe and certain other products are entitled to a $30 rebate, bringing the cost down to $69.

If you want to familiarise yourself with Elements whilst you wait for the new version to come out, we'd suggest buying the current version now. According to Adobe's FAQ:
"Those customers in North America who purchase Photoshop Elements 1.0 after version 2.0 has been formally announced on July 15, 2002 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the latest version. All claims for complementary upgrades must be received by 60 days after the date that Photoshop Elements 2.0 first ships. To qualify for their upgrades, customers will need to call Adobe customer service at (800) 492-3623 and have their original purchase receipt and proof of purchase for Photoshop Elements 1.0."
So - you can have your cake, and eat it too! Buy the current version, get used to it, and watch this site for news as to when the new version ships - then phone Adobe and get updated free of charge...
