US Army and Air Force Exchange Service carries the company's Instant Power batteries and chargers...

Regular readers may remember that we've reported several times since Comdex last year on the "Instant Power" battery packs sold by Electric Fuel Corp. Our personal feeling is that they are rather expensive for single-use batteries, but they do offer digital camera owners a potential emergency fallback to get the photo should your rechargeable batteries run out and ditch you far from a power jack... A fairly long 3-year shelf-life means that you can keep a spare battery in your camera bag, and be fairly confident it will work when you need it.

A press release from Electric Fuel suggests they've identified one market where the batteries may be ideally suited - US armed forces. Distributed around the world, and hence fairly likely to find themselves without the right tools to charge their batteries - or potentially even away from a power source altogether - individuals serving their country will now be able to buy Instant Power products at Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) in most European and Middle-Eastern installations.

US Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) Orders Electric Fuel's Instant Power(TM) Batteries and Chargers

Products sold to US and NATO forces in Europe and Middle East

NEW YORK, July 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Electric Fuel Corporation (Nasdaq: EFCX - News), the world's leading zinc-air fuel cell company, announced today that The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) of the United States has ordered and now carries Electric Fuel's line of INSTANT POWER(TM) chargers and batteries in most of its military installations in Europe & the Middle East.

The AAFES brings a tradition of value, service and support to its 7.3 million customers in the United States, Europe and the Pacific. AAFES' mission is to provide quality merchandise and services at uniformly low prices to active duty military personnel, Guard and Reserve members, military retirees and family members, regardless of where they're stationed. INSTANT POWER is now sold in "POX" or "BX" outlets serving US and NATO forces. Stores are located across Europe & the Middle East. Products are also carried in Temporary Field Exchanges ("TEE").

The AAFES has ordered INSTANT POWER Chargers for cellphones and PDAs and zinc air batteries for video camcorders and digital cameras.

Electric Fuel's Instant Power Charger requires no electrical outlet and allows cellphone consumers to stay connected, even if their battery is dead. The pocket-sized device weighs less than three ounces and allows cellphones and PDAs to be used and charged on the move, anywhere, anytime. The Instant Power charger draws energy from its replaceable Power Cartridge(TM) and plugs directly into the mobile device. Each cartridge provides up to three charges and supports hours of talk or work time. Video and digital camera batteries provide enough power for 10 hours of filming or thousands of digital photos.

Electric Fuel President and CEO Yehuda Harats said, "Our products are ideal for people on the go. Soldiers and their families stationed abroad appreciate the ability to 'always be in-touch' and the 'no electricity needed' features of our products. This is an important new market segment for us, which we intend to develop alongside other defense-related markets."
