There's been a lot of buzz about the Nikon D40 recently. We'll naturally have full details posted immediately, if/when they become publically available; here's why we're not pointing to the rumors in the meantime.

Thanks to an apparent leak by a German camera distributor, the web has been abuzz for the last week or so with rumors of a new DSLR from Nikon, the D40.

Like other legitimate sites, we maintain relationships with the various camera manufacturers, whereby we receive advance information about forthcoming cameras under NDA (non-disclosure agreements). We thus can't comment on any details of a possible D40, or even confirm or deny that such a model is coming.

Beyond that though, we won't be pointing to any of the web pages carrying D40 rumors. Without commenting on any of the specifics of the D40 rumors themselves, the general problem with rumors is that, while they frequently contain some elements of truth, they often also contain glaring errors, and just as frequently leave out important information that could affect consumers' perceptions of a product. Rumors may be titillating and fun to pass back and forth, but they ultimately only muddy the waters, and distort the public conversation about new products.

So yes, the web is rife with rumors of a D40, to such an extent that it seemed silly for us to entirely ignore them. - But we won't be helping propagate them, nor will we make any comment on their validity. You can be assured though, that the moment such a product is officially announced (if it indeed is), we'll immediatly have full, authoritative information posted for our readers to make up their own minds about it.
