Why We Like the Nikon Z f

The Z f stands out for its retro-inspired design, which takes cues from Nikon’s classic FM2 film camera. Its dedicated mechanical-style dials let you adjust shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation directly from the top plate, creating a more tactile shooting experience. The camera also features a dedicated switch for quickly changing between still photography, monochrome, and video modes. Its magnesium-alloy construction gives it a solid feel while maintaining the distinctive appearance of a traditional film camera.

Underneath the classic styling, the Z f uses Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, the same processor found in the Z8 and Z9. Combined with its 24.5MP full-frame sensor, this gives the camera access to sophisticated subject detection and tracking for people, animals, birds, and vehicles. Its autofocus system is particularly useful for portraits, street photography, and everyday shooting, while the full-frame sensor provides flexibility when working in low light or creating shallow depth of field.

The Z f is also capable of recording 4K video at up to 60fps, although this mode uses a DX crop. Its five-axis in-body image stabilization is another highlight, with up to 8 stops of compensation available under specific conditions with compatible lenses. For photographers who enjoy the tactile experience of traditional cameras but still want modern autofocus, video, and stabilization features, the Z f offers an appealing combination.

What to Consider Before Buying

The Z f’s flat front grip is one of its more noticeable ergonomic compromises. While the retro design looks attractive, photographers with larger hands or heavier lenses may find the camera less comfortable to hold for extended periods. An optional grip extension can improve handling, but it adds to the overall size and cost.

Some controls also take getting used to, particularly if you’re accustomed to Nikon’s more conventional mirrorless bodies. The dedicated dials provide a different shooting experience, but not everyone will find them as convenient as modern command dials. Consider handling the camera before buying if ergonomics and quick access to settings are high priorities.
