Why We Like the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB SSD

The Samsung 990 Pro delivers high sequential transfer speeds for a PCIe 4.0 SSD, making it a strong option for users who regularly work with large files. Its rated speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s for reads and 6,900 MB/s for writes can help accelerate file transfers, game installations, and workflows involving large video and photo projects.

For photographers and video editors, the 4TB capacity is particularly useful for storing RAW image libraries, high-resolution video footage, and active editing projects. Fast storage can also make importing and transferring large batches of files more convenient. However, playback and editing performance depend on your entire system, including the processor, memory, software, and media format—not just the SSD.

Samsung also provides its Magician software for monitoring drive health, checking performance, and updating firmware. These tools make it easier to keep tabs on the drive and maintain it over time.

The 990 Pro uses an M.2 2280 form factor, making it suitable for compatible desktop motherboards and laptops. The standard model’s compact design can also work in a PlayStation 5, provided you install it according to Sony’s compatibility and cooling requirements. Check whether the particular listing is for the standard drive or a heatsink-equipped version before purchasing.

What to Consider Before Buying

The Samsung 990 Pro is a high-performance SSD, but its speed may be unnecessary for everyday tasks such as web browsing, office work, and basic file storage. More affordable SSDs can offer a better value for those workloads.

Also, its advertised speeds are maximum sequential figures under suitable conditions, not guaranteed transfer rates for every task. Moving 100GB of data in 15 to 20 seconds would require sustained transfer speeds of roughly 5,000 to 6,700 MB/s, which isn’t guaranteed in real-world use. Performance can vary with the source drive, file sizes, system configuration, and thermal conditions.

Finally, make sure your device supports an M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe drive. The 990 Pro is a PCIe 4.0 model, and although it can operate in compatible systems with different PCIe generations, performance will depend on the interface available.

At $799, the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB is worth considering if you need a large, fast drive for demanding creative work or gaming. For lighter workloads, however, a less expensive SSD may leave you with more money for other upgrades.
