We must admit, we raised our eyebrows a little when we saw a new compact camera announced in Japan alongside the PowerShot SX400 IS. It's not that unusual to see a camera launched in Europe or Asia which later comes to the US market, but we struggled to find any difference between this new 16-megapixel, 8x optical zoom Canon IXY 130 and the existing PowerShot ELPH 140 IS. What, precisely, had been upgraded in this new model?

And then it came to us in a flash of inspiration: the US market has gotten there first, for a change! When Canon launched the PowerShot ELPH 140 IS in the US market last February, it wasn't mirrored by an announcement in the company's home market. Now, it turns out that the ELPH 140 IS will be available in Japan after all, sporting a different model number and the Canon IXY branding used in that market.

The Canon ELPH 140 IS (shown) is identical to the Japanese-market IXY 130.

We've since confirmed with Canon that the two cameras are one and the same: the IXY 130 is the PowerShot ELPH 140 IS by another name. So if you're in the USA and happen to see the blogsphere reporting on this new model, fear not! It's not yet another camera that will pass us by, but one that we got our hands on first, for a change!

Available since February 2014, the Canon ELPH 140 IS retails in the US market for around US$130. Japanese-market pricing hasn't been disclosed. Find out more details in our Canon ELPH 140 IS preview.
