Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing a major camera upgrade alongside a new processor and expanded AI capabilities. The new Pro models introduce a variable-aperture main camera, additional manual controls for photographers, and new tools designed to give users more control over the look and authenticity of their images.
The new lineup was unveiled at Apple’s Surprise and Shine event, led by new Apple CEO John Ternus. Former CEO Tim Cook has moved into the role of executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors.
iPhone 18 Pro Gets a New Variable-Aperture Camera
The iPhone 18 Pro brings a significant change to Apple’s camera system with a variable aperture on its 48-megapixel Fusion main camera. The aperture can automatically adjust based on the scene, giving the camera greater flexibility when capturing different types of subjects and lighting conditions. The main camera will have a maximum aperture of F/1.4, which gives it 50% better low-light performance.
Apple is also introducing Pro Controls, giving photographers access to additional camera settings and creative controls. Users can adjust parameters such as aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram, providing more direct control over the final image.
The iPhone 18 Pro also retains Photographic Styles, with new options for adjusting characteristics such as texture and grain. This gives users additional control over the appearance of their photographs without requiring extensive editing after capture.
Image Authenticity Features
Apple is also introducing new image authenticity features designed to provide information about an image’s origin. The system can use reference information to indicate that an image was captured with the iPhone’s main camera when using Reference Mode.
This could give photographers and viewers more context about where an image came from as AI-generated and heavily manipulated images become increasingly common.
A20 Pro Brings More Performance
Powering the iPhone 18 Pro models is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built using a 2nm manufacturing process. Apple says the chip is its fastest smartphone processor yet.
The A20 Pro features a six-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, along with a seven-core GPU. Apple says the GPU delivers a 40 percent improvement in graphics performance compared with the previous generation.
The chip also includes a Neural Accelerator and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, with Apple claiming significantly faster AI processing and improved 8-bit floating-point performance. The new chip package also provides 50 percent more bandwidth.
Improved Thermal Management
Apple has also redesigned the thermal management system in the iPhone 18 Pro. A new vapor chamber uses continuously circulated deionized water to help dissipate heat during demanding workloads.
Apple claims the new thermal design provides up to a 40 percent improvement in sustained performance compared with previous generations. This should benefit intensive applications, gaming, and other workloads that place sustained demands on the processor.
Up to 45 Hours of Battery Life
Despite the performance improvements, Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro continues to offer all-day battery life.
The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 35 hours of battery life, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach up to 43 hours.
New Colors and Design
The iPhone 18 Pro will be available in Silver, Deep Black, Glacier, and Burgundy finishes.
The Pro models continue Apple’s premium flagship positioning, with the Pro Max offering the larger display and battery capacity for users who want the company’s most capable iPhone.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Pre-orders begin September 12, with both models scheduled to become available on September 18.
