Sony may be preparing to launch its next high-resolution flagship, with a new report suggesting the Sony A7R VI could be announced as early as May 2026.
If the report holds, the new model would replace the A7R V, which launched in late 2022 and still stands as one of Sony’s more capable hybrid cameras. Recent price drops on the A7R V could also hint that a successor is on the way.Â
A Step Up in Resolution and Speed
According to the report from Sony Alpha Rumors, the A7R VI could feature a new 67-megapixel Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor—an increase from the 61MP sensor found in the A7R V.
The sensor is expected to be paired with an updated BIONZ XR2 processor and a high-bandwidth LSI, potentially enabling faster readout speeds and improved overall performance.
Burst shooting is rumored to reach up to 30 frames per second in 14-bit RAW using the electronic shutter, with full autofocus and auto exposure support during continuous shooting.
Sony is also said to be introducing a new AI-driven autofocus system, building on the already advanced subject recognition capabilities seen in recent models.
Dynamic range could see a boost as well, with reports pointing to up to 16 stops when using the mechanical shutter alongside dual conversion gain HDR.
Video Capabilities Catching Up
On the video side, the A7R VI is rumored to bring features that close the gap with competing hybrid cameras.
Expected modes include 8K30p (oversampled from a higher resolution), 4K and 6.4K oversampled recording, and 4K120p for high frame rate capture.
This would mark a notable upgrade over the A7R V, which lacks open gate recording and tops out at 4K60p.

Stabilization and Viewfinder
In-body image stabilization is expected to improve slightly, with reports suggesting up to 8.5 stops of compensation.
The camera is also rumored to retain the 9.44-million-dot OLED EVF, with added brightness and grayscale improvements for better visibility in different lighting conditions.
Still a Rumor—for Now
As with all early reports, these specifications are not confirmed and could change ahead of an official announcement.
Still, if even part of this pans out, the A7R VI could represent a meaningful step forward for Sony’s high-resolution lineup—especially for users who want stronger video capabilities alongside high-resolution stills.
Pricing and Availability
There’s no word yet on pricing, but the Sony A7R VI is rumored to be announced and potentially released in May 2026.
If the rumored specs hold, the A7R VI looks like it could be Sony’s answer to increasingly video-capable high-resolution cameras—bringing faster performance and more advanced video features into the A7R line.
