After weeks of rumors and leaked specifications, Sony has officially begun teasing its next Cinema Line camera. While the company has not revealed the productโs name, the teaser strongly suggests it is the long-rumored Sony FX5.
Published across Sonyโs official social media channels, the brief teaser carries the tagline โLighting the Way Forwardโ and shows the silhouette of a Cinema Line camera. The outline reveals the familiar red and green tally lights along with a top handle, which appears to match the optional XLR handle that has surfaced in recent leaks.
Sony has confirmed the camera will be unveiled on July 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. EDT.
What We Know So Far
Although Sony has yet to officially confirm any specifications, recent leaks have painted a detailed picture of what to expect from the FX5.
The camera is rumored to feature a 16.6-megapixel full-frame stacked CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 image processor and a dedicated AI processing unit for subject recognition and autofocus. It is also expected to become the first Cinema Line camera to offer 5K Open Gate recording in a 3:2 aspect ratio.
Other rumored video features include internal 16-bit RAW recording in Sonyโs X-OCN LT/C1/C2 formats, 16 stops of dynamic range, and a triple base ISO of 800, 4000, and 12800.
The autofocus system is expected to support AI-powered subject detection and real-time Eye AF, similar to Sonyโs latest Alpha cameras.
Designed for Professional Video
According to current rumors, the FX5 will continue Sonyโs cinema-focused approach with several features aimed at professional filmmakers.
The camera is expected to feature a 3.5-inch fully articulating touchscreen, an optional removable tilting electronic viewfinder, and dual SD/CFexpress Type A card slots. It is also rumored to support 32-bit float audio recording when paired with the optional XLR handle.
Interestingly, the FX5 is rumored to omit several features found on the FX2 and FX3. Reports suggest it will not include a photo mode, reinforcing its position as a dedicated cinema camera. It is also expected to ship without internal ND filters or external SSD recording support.
Physically, the camera is said to resemble the FX3, although with a slightly thicker body.
