Thypoch has announced the Sculptor AF 23mm F1.4, its first autofocus prime lens. Designed for Fujifilm X-mount cameras, the lens offers a 35mm-equivalent field of view and a relatively compact design, with a launch price of $349.

The 35mm-equivalent focal length makes the lens a versatile option for street, travel, documentary, and everyday photography. It is also well suited to environmental portraits, offering a perspective that captures subjects alongside more of their surroundings.

Optical Design and Autofocus

The Sculptor AF 23mm F1.4 uses 12 elements in 10 groups, including four low-dispersion elements, two aspherical elements, and one high-refractive-index element. Thypoch says the optical design is intended to deliver sharpness across the frame.

The lens also features the company’s E.PM coating, designed to reduce flare and preserve contrast when shooting against bright light sources. Its 10-blade aperture diaphragm is intended to produce pleasing out-of-focus rendering.

Thypoch has not specified the type of autofocus motor used in the lens. However, the Sculptor AF supports subject tracking with compatible Fujifilm cameras. It also offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.25m and a maximum magnification of 0.13x, providing some flexibility for close-up compositions.

Compact Design With Manual Controls

The lens measures 71.4mm long and weighs 283g, making it a relatively portable option for everyday use. It accepts standard 52mm filters.

Its exterior features diagonal detailing and a vintage-inspired aesthetic that resembles the design language of Thypoch’s Voyager lenses. Despite its modern autofocus system, the Sculptor AF retains a manual focus ring and a dedicated aperture ring.

How It Compares With Fujifilm and Sigma

At $349, the Thypoch Sculptor AF 23mm F1.4 enters a competitive segment of the Fujifilm X-mount market.

The Fujifilm XF23mm F1.4 R LM WR is a more expensive alternative, listed at $1,049.96. It weighs 375g and measures 77.8mm long, making it both heavier and longer than the Thypoch lens.

Another competitor is the Sigma 23mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary, which is listed at $609. It weighs 340g and measures 76.9mm long.

The Thypoch lens is therefore smaller and lighter than both alternatives, while also carrying a substantially lower launch price. Its autofocus performance and optical quality will ultimately determine how it compares in practical use.
