The Nikon Coolpix S60 features a sleek, compact body housing a sizeable 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD. Thanks to the touchscreen, the Nikon S6 has only two physical buttons on the camera body - power and shutter release respectively. With 10 megapixels of resolution, a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens, ISO sensitivity up to 2000 (3200 max at five megapixel resolution), and CCD shift image stabilization, Nikon's Coolpix S60 should prove capable of handling quite a range of photographic situations.

The Coolpix S60's touchscreen user interface allows for some pretty intuitive features. Users can simply touch a subject on the Nikon S60's screen to lock focus and exposure when shooting, and the touch of a fingertip can scroll or zoom when in playback mode. There is also a Draw Function, enabling addition of memos or diagrams on images, as well as a Paint Function that includes a set of frames and stamps that can be added to photos. When using these functions, the camera retains an original of the image as a back-up. A stylus is included with the Coolpix S60 for use with the Paint and Draw functions. Users can also customize the S60's touchscreen menus, choosing from three different styles that suit their preferences - all designed for navigation with a fingertip.

Nikon's Auto Scene Selector mode gives the camera the ability to automatically select the correct scene mode for the situation - be it a landscape, portrait, or perhaps a macro photo. When in portrait mode, the Nikon Coolpix S60 also offers both smile detection (the camera automatically releases the shutter when the subject in the photo smiles), as well as a blink warning that displays a warning on-screen if your subject's eyes weren't open.

For viewing images on an HDTV display, the Nikon S60 has HDMI connectivity; a standard definition video output is also offered for the luddites amongst us. A rechargeable EN-EL10 Lithium Ion battery is included with the Coolpix S60, and should yield 140 shots on a charge. Also included is Nikon's Coolpix Software Suite for editing and modifying photos. Both SD and SDHC memory cards can be used, but interestingly the S60 isn't compatible with MultiMediaCards.

The Nikon Coolpix S60 is available in a choice of six colors – Crimson Red, Burgundy, Champagne Pink, Espresso Black, Arctic White, and Platinum Bronze. It is due to ship in the USA from September 2008 with pricing of about $350.
