Fuji XP70 Review -- First Impressions

The Fuji FinePix XP70 joins Fujifilm's XP series of rugged, waterproof cameras designed for hikers, boaters, and other outdoors enthusiasts -- or anyone who's just tough on cameras. Like its earlier sibling, the FinePix XP60, the XP70 sits as a base model in the waterproof camera lineup, yet now offers even more advanced stills and video shooting options as well as the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity (which the XP60 lacked).

The Fuji XP70 shares a strikingly similar design to the XP60 with its distinctive bulging, top-corner lens and, of course, keeps Fujifilm's "Four-way Protection," common to all XP models. The XP70 has been toughened up a bit, though, as it's now rated as waterproof to 33 ft./10m (up from 20 ft./6m), while remaining shockproof from a drop of 5 ft./1.5m and freezeproof to 14°F/-10°C, as well as dustproof like the previous model.

On the inside, the XP70 features the same 1/2.3"-type 16.4-megapixel CMOS sensor with a "Dual IS" system incorporating both sensor-shift image stabilization and ISO boost.

The camera's 5X zoom lens is also the same as in previous models and covers a very useful range from 28mm to 140mm (in 35mm equivalent terms) with a maximum aperture range of f/3.9 to f/4.9. Viewing and composing are done with the same 2.7-inch Ultra-Bright, 460K-dot LCD, which features an anti-reflective coating, making for easier viewing in bright sunlight or underwater.

The Fujifilm FinePix XP70 also sports a wide selection of special scene modes, including HDR and Motion Panorama 360 modes, as well as Fuji's "Advanced Filter" modes. These include creative styles such as Pop Color for a contrast and saturation boost, Toy Camera for a vignetted 1970's look, Soft Focus, Miniature and several others.

Like the previous model, the XP70 has a continuous burst mode of 10 frames per second at full resolution, as well as higher speed burst modes at reduced resolution. It also shares similar video recording modes such as Full HD 1080 60i/30p video, as well as high speed video recording up to 240 frames per second at 320 x 240 resolution, allowing for even smoother slow-motion video capture of sports and action.

Images and movies are stored on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and power is derived from a proprietary NP-45S lithium-ion battery rated at 210 shots per charge. In addition to built-in Wi-Fi, connectivity features include a Micro (Type-D) HDMI port and a USB 2.0 port for data transfer and charging.

The Fuji XP70 begins shipping in March 2014 for a suggested list price of US$229.95 in a choice of orange, blue or yellow colors.
