Getting into full-frame photography doesn’t have to mean spending thousands of dollars. Canon’s EOS RP is one of the more affordable entry points into the company’s RF mirrorless system, and Amazon has made it even more accessible with a current sale price of $799, a 30% discount from its regular price of approximately $1,141.

The EOS RP features a 26.2MP full-frame sensor, a fully articulating touchscreen, and Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system. Its compact body also makes it an appealing option for photographers who want the benefits of a larger sensor without carrying a bulky camera.

Canon EOS RP Full Frame Mirrorless Camera

Vlogging Portable Digital Camera with 26.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4K Video Recording and 3.0” Vari-Angle Touch LCD Screen, Body, Black

Why We Like the Canon EOS RP

The EOS RP’s 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor captures detailed images with attractive colors and good low-light performance. Its larger sensor also gives photographers more control over depth of field, making it easier to separate portrait subjects from their backgrounds when paired with a suitable lens.

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system provides reliable autofocus for still photography, with face and eye detection for people. The camera also supports subject tracking, although its recognition capabilities are more limited than those of newer mirrorless models. It remains a useful system for everyday photography, portraits, and general shooting.

A fully articulating 3-inch touchscreen makes it easier to compose images from high or low angles, as well as frame yourself when recording video. The camera is compatible with Canon’s RF-mount lenses, and an optional EF-EOS R adapter also lets you use compatible EF and EF-S lenses.

Portability is another major selling point. The EOS RP weighs approximately 440 grams for the body alone, or around 485 grams with a battery and memory card. That makes it a relatively lightweight full-frame camera and a practical travel companion for photographers who don’t want to carry a larger setup.

What to Consider Before Buying

The EOS RP doesn’t have in-body image stabilization, so you’ll need a stabilized lens or another stabilization solution to reduce camera shake. Its video capabilities are also more limited than those of newer mirrorless cameras, particularly if you want advanced 4K recording or modern creator-focused features.

Battery life is another compromise. Canon rates the LP-E17-powered EOS RP at approximately 250 shots per charge under standard testing conditions, although actual results vary depending on how you use the camera. Picking up spare batteries is a good idea if you plan to shoot for extended periods.

At $799, the EOS RP is an affordable way to enter Canon’s full-frame RF system. It’s particularly appealing to photographers who prioritize still images, portability, and access to full-frame lenses over the latest video features.
