Canon ELPH 340 HS Review -- First Impressions

Preview posted: 01/06/2014

The line of little ELPH cameras has become one of the cornerstones of the compact camera market, and the Canon ELPH 340 HS is the latest offering to wear the ELPH badge. Successor to last year's ELPH 330 HS model, the 340 HS sports a longer optical zoom range of 12x (25-300mm eq.) versus the previous model's 10x range, and moves up by 4 megapixels in resolution to a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 4+ processor. Aimed at shooters looking to step up from the limitations of their smartphones and experience good zoom range and better low light performance, the ELPH 340 HS also brings several firsts to the storied ELPH camera line.

For starters, not only does the ELPH 340 HS come Wi-Fi enabled, but it also now includes Near Field Communication (NFC), allowing users to press a button on the camera, tap their NFC-enabled Android device and transfer images with relative ease. Also new to the ELPH line is Creative Shot mode, originally introduced on the Canon N, which includes 4 categories encompassing 46 filters total and allows for a plethora of creative variations, while still preserving the original image.

Hybrid AUTO is also onboard, which takes still images and short video clips and combines them into a video highlight reel of a vacation or a shooting outing… no video editing software or skills required. In addition, the camera can be controlled remotely via Canon's free app using an iOS or Android device, allowing for added shooting convenience for certain situations. The ELPH 340 HS also sports a dedicated movie record button and shoots up to 1080p Full HD video.

All of these upgrades come despite a slightly lower retail price (around $200 versus the 330 HS's list price of $230) along with an altered choice of colors (purple replaces last year's pink option).

The PowerShot ELPH 340 HS is expected to start shipping in March 2014 at an estimated retail price of US$199.99, and will be offered in purple, silver or black.
