Fuji XP80 Review -- First Impressions

by Gannon Burgett
Preview posted: 01/15/2015

Fuji has announced the FinePix XP80, a successor to its vibrant and rugged XP70. Deemed the "toughest camera yet for extreme weather protection," the XP80 keeps the same shockproof and waterproof form factor as its predecessor while stepping up its game.

Designed for those who prefer adventure, the Fuji XP80 is waterproof to 50ft. (15m), shockproof from 5.8ft (1.75m), freeze proof to 14 degrees F (-10 degrees C) and all-around dustproof. This ups the XP70's capabilities, with waterproofing improved by 17ft./5m and the shockproof height by 0.8ft. (0.25m).

Inside, the FinePix XP80 features the same 1/2.3-inch-type, 16.4-megapixel CMOS sensor as the XP70. Its 5x optical zoom lens is also identical to its younger siblings, including its 28mm to 140mm (in 35mm equivalent) focal length and maximum aperture range of f/3.9 to f/4.9.

To review and compose images, you'll be looking at the same 2.7-inch Ultra-Bright, 460K-dot LCD, which includes Fuji's anti-reflective coating for easier shooting in bright sunlight and underwater.

The Fujifilm FinePix XP80 includes Wi-Fi connectivity, introduced to the XP lineup with XP70. New for the XP80 though is a remote shooting mode, which allows you to connect the camera to your smart device through via Fujifilm's Camera Remote app. This connectivity also allows the XP80 to wirelessly send images to your smartphone, tablet and computer.

Like previous models, the Fuji XP80 includes a handful of dedicated creative options through scene and filter modes. In particular, the scene modes allow for specialized options for soft focus, tilt-shift and a new sketch modes. The filters options let you recreate the look of fisheye and HDR modes.

The Fuji XP80 keeps the continuous burst rate of 10 frames per second at full resolution, with options to bump up the speed at decreased resolutions. Video recording however receives improvements, with the top frame rate at Full HD (1920 x 1080) now 60p instead of 60i. And the XP80 adds a new 320 frames per second high-speed movie mode at a resolution of 160 x 120 while retaining the XP70's 240fps at 320 x 240 and 120fps at 640 x 480.

As with the rest of the XP lineup, the XP80 stores its media on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and uses Fuji's proprietary NP-45S lithium-ion battery rated at 210 shots per charge.

The Fujifilm FinePix XP80 begins shipping March of 2015 for a suggested list price of US$229.95 and will be available in Blue, Yellow and Graphite color options.
