One new optic, another gets a name: Fuji reveals updated X-mount lens roadmap

New lens options are on the way if you're a Fuji X-mount shooter, but the order in which they're going to arrive may not be quite what you were expecting if you read last spring's Fuji X-Mount roadmap. The company has just released an updated lens roadmap which adds one model, names and delays another, and defers a third whose name we already knew.

The updated Fujifilm X-Mount lens roadmap also acknowledges the arrival of two lenses since publication of the previous map. The Fuji XF10-24mmF4 R OIS is now on sale, and the XF18-135mmF3.5-5.6 R OIS is expected to start shipping any day now.

But it's the new lenses that strike us as the most interesting. Once again, Fuji showers prime-lens fans with love, taking the X-mount up to 12 prime lenses either shipping or announced -- a number that outweighs the offering of nine announced or available zooms.

Fujifilm's updated lens roadmap for prime lenses shows 12 models available or on the way.

The Fujifilm XF90mmF2 R is a brand-new addition to the roadmap, slated to arrive by the end of 2015. The XF16mmF1.4 R, meanwhile, was on the roadmap before but without a name. (Previously, it was referred to solely as "high speed wide angle lens.") This optic is now expected to arrive in mid-2015, rather than late 2014 as previously forecast.

Also delayed is the Fujifilm XF16-55mmF2.8 R WR, which will now be the third weather-resistant lens to arrive on the X-mount. Previously, it had been forecast to arrive before the XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR, which is set to begin shipping on schedule later this year. Now, the 16-55mm WR is predicted to arrive in spring 2015.

The updated zoom lens roadmap includes nine available or incoming lens models.

And that leaves one more lens on the way, with its delivery window now narrowed rather. The as-yet unnamed "super tele-photo zoom lens" was previously set only for a 2015 release -- but when in the year it would arrive wasn't forecast. Now we know that this optic should be landing in winter 2015, making it the last of the currently-forecast lenses to be available.

So to summarize, you can look forward to the XF18-135mm lens within days, followed by the 50-140mm WR later this year. The XF16-55mm, XF16mm, XF90mm, and unnamed super telezoom will follow in 2015. Six new lenses within 18 months: it's an exciting time to be a Fuji X-series camera owner!
