What is a documentary wedding photographer and what sets their work apart?

Award-winning photographer Shane O'Neill is the latest photographer featured in Adorama's ongoing series, Spotlight. O'Neill primarily does documentary wedding photography, but he also dabbles in commercial and foot photography.
As a documentary wedding photographer, Shane captures many of the smaller surrounding moments of the big day and he finds that these types of images age better than more traditional wedding photography. He tries to stay out of the way and be discreet so that he can better capture the candid, heartfelt moments of the wedding day.
"Humor is the most predominant emotion at a wedding," O'Neill says. If someone does something awkward or embarrassing, Shane is there, although not in any sort of mean way, but in a funny way that disarms people and allows everyone to have a good laugh and become more comfortable. Every wedding and wedding day has its own character, he says, which allows his job to stay fresh and exciting.
On the gear side of things, O'Neill shoots weddings with a pair of Nikon D850 DSLR cameras. He also shoots with a Hasselblad X1D mirrorless medium format camera.
