Creating a powerful black and white image is not as simple as removing the color in an image, but rather requires a more precise, fine-tuned approach. Within different image editors, there are varied ways to create black and white conversions. In Capture One, a powerful raw image editor, there are numerous tools you can use to create a great black and white image.

Below, David Grover from Phase One goes through the various tools available in Capture One for creating a black and white image from start to finish, including setting up a black and white workspace, doing a black and white conversion, balancing exposure and levels, using the luma curve for contrast adjustments, making gradient masks, utilizing the structure slider for detail enhancement, removing dust spots, making a layered adjustment, adding film grain, performing split toning and utilizing the color balance tool to create a triple tone. Even if you don't use Capture One -- which has a free 30-day trial, if you'd like to try it -- there's certainly a lot you can learn about the elements which make up a great black and white image.
