Insta360 Luna Ultra Gets 22.5x Zoom and 4K Vertical Video

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is getting a significant upgrade just a few months after its launch. The company has released a free firmware update that adds new video and zoom capabilities, alongside a new telephoto lens that pushes the pocket camera’s maximum zoom to 22.5x.

4K Vertical Video and AI Stage Mode

Firmware version 1.1.8 adds 4K30p video recording when shooting vertically. Previously, the Luna Ultra was limited to 3K resolution in vertical mode because its image sensor does not physically rotate when the camera is turned vertically.

The new mode uses 6K footage to produce 4K vertical video through oversampling, allowing content creators to capture higher-resolution footage for social media platforms.

The firmware also introduces AI-enhanced Stage Mode, which is designed specifically for recording performers at concerts and other live events. The feature could be particularly useful for content creators who want to capture artists while attending shows.

15x Zoom and a New Telephoto Lens

The firmware update also increases the Luna Ultra’s built-in zoom from 12x to 15x for both photos and video.

Insta360 is also introducing a new Ultra Telephoto Lens with 1.5x magnification. Combined with the camera’s new 15x zoom capability, the adapter pushes the maximum zoom to 22.5x.

The adapter clips over the Luna Ultra’s dual-camera system but completely covers the wide-angle lens. This means users cannot simply zoom back out to the wide-angle camera while the adapter is attached, as doing so can result in a black image because the lens is physically obstructed.

The design is therefore primarily intended for users who want to take advantage of the Luna Ultra’s longer telephoto camera and need additional reach.

Pricing and Availability

The Insta360 Luna Ultra Telephoto Lens is now available from the Insta360 Store for $59.99.

The firmware update is available as a free update for the Luna Ultra.
